YiddishNewYork FilmFest 2025 screened “Shop on Main Street” (Ida Kaminska!), Partisans of Vilna” (edited by my YNYFF co-curator Josh Waletzky), “A Tango for Rachel” (directorial debut/co-star Lea Kalisch) & 1926 Soviet Ukrainian silent “Benya Krik”: original live score played by Matt Darriau & band

“A Tango for Rachel”: a brilliant new bilingual (mameloshn/Spanish) big-screen show was our finale at Yiddish New York 2025 film festival. This 29-min period marvel shot on location in Argentina, by debut director Lea Kalisch who beamed in live Zoom from Europe for Q&A after the movie. Great night!

Great talk by @evesicular.bsky.social about what she found out about Shirley Baron so far, and about the phenomenon of orphan musicians and women's music groups more broadly etc.
another ticket I bought is for my friend @evesicular.bsky.social 's talk on Shirley Baron, a NYC drummer from WWII through the late 80s who I found ads for in my YIVO research this spring and we both became quite interested in. there's a whole oral history with her about being in a 1930s orphanage.
For Yiddish New York 2025, I’ll present a lecture on Shirley Baron, mid 20th-century percussionist & bandleader. Thanks @alte.klezmor.im for your YIVO & NYPL archival research which led us to stories of Shirley’s life both on and off bandstands in NYC & “the [Catskill] mountains” yiddishnewyork.com

I’m giving a talk at Yiddish New York on Shirley Baron, little known NYC-based drummer/bandleader whose career spanned the 1930s-1980s. There’s an entire oral history transcript at NYPL (recorded in 1988). While I have no photos of her, I’m enjoying a look back: Int’l Sweethearts of Rhythm archives

thanks for this great reminder @clancyny.bsky.social Your consensus with Brendan Gill was an auspicious first review for our Metropolitan Klezmer debut! And thanks for introducing me to Barbara Rubin via her Warhol screentest
I'm remembering a 1998 holiday party at the Andy Warhol Foundation. Lots of champagne. But no music.

A colleague had just released a klezmer CD. We played it over the office P.A.

Brendan Gill (New Yorker) popped out of his office. He loved it! Me too!

“Last Candle” is a Jill Sobule original she wrote among songs for the stageplay “Yentl.” She taught us this music when Isle of Klezbos performed for the project a decade ago. We share this tribute from 6/24/2025 at Joe’s Pub, dedicated as a memorial to Jill (with her own intro)
