If you ever wanted to fight the opening month of a war between the US and China between you and a friend or for 200 people you can do so! Jaws of the Dragon is freely available for download, and I keep it periodically updated as forces change and I read more.

Always the riddle of steel man- what’s a sword without the arm and skill to wield it? My students groan when I quote Conan but it’s so useful as a quick and easy concept!
Since then, I’ve refined some of that and published it in JAMS. BLUF: it’s not the tech, it’s the force structures that can exploit the tech.

The issue with real maps instead of terrain by hex is that people can have different opinions on the dominant terrain in the hex. My genius solution to players (and officers...) being unable to read maps: go by hand hex-by-hex to label the number of units that can use the terrain.

Due to the sheer number of players signing up for the KCL Crisis Sim nowadays I'm having to fit more players into Jaws. Sheets makes it pretty easy to create a midterms model letting me put more politicians on the US team worried about the effect of the crisis/war on elections.

Another run of Jaws of the Dragon for MA students this weekend. Quick Chinese back down after a failed attempt to enforce an AEZ, but then quick escalation to all out war after the US stopped by force a VBSS of a ship carrying aid and the Chinese responded by attacking the SAG.

One of the fun things about wargaming is getting to look for and then sort through a bunch of data to build models to figure out that the answer is 3 dice and 20 supply. I still have to try to find some more modern numbers, then to size the direct fire units.

ISM University's wargaming in 2025 ended with four sessions on Lithuania's development over 25 coming years. Each involved 12 players from business, legal, academia, culture, other sectors. They played as national and municipal government, business, labour, culture and education, and hostile forces.

A couple of weeks ago, I ran a Littoral Commander session with some junior medical officers during a weekend meetup. When someone asked if I wanted to organize a short wargaming workshop, I agreed right away. It felt like a good chance to try something new together with a new crowd.

I got to play this at Connections this year, and I second this assessment. It's a good game for an introduction to modern air combat having the right level of abstraction to be both representative enough, playable, and to leave enough room for a good discussion.
"IADS: The Game" is one of the games I enjoyed learning this year. It is #wargame designed to be fast-paced and easy to learn for professional military education. It is a reminder that games don't have to be complex to be good. #wargaming 🎲

Samurai skirmishing today. The most bloody run of these rules I've ever seen, with an almost complete inability of our opponents to roll poorly (and my inability roll above a 5) made this a brutal slog. Our clan is badly short of key members and retainers after this.
