I agree with the idea that #DNA or other scientific markers can’t define who we are. They’re #colonial inventions. But I struggle when theory ignores how those same systems caused disconnection in the first place. #FNMI #Indigenous

Most #FNMI reserves aren’t fully #sovereign; they operate under the #IndianAct, rely on federal funding, and are shaped by #colonial and #capitalist systems.

Grok is an indoctrination tool for the fascist right.

Twitter is an indoctrination tool for the fascist right.

There is no reason to use either. You are not going to break through the algorithm. You are doing more harm than good simply by being on the platform.
High end wealth inequality allows for shit like this

The principle makes sense in theory #Nations #FNMI self-determine membership but in reality, those #Nations are still navigating #colonial power, legal restrictions, and scarcity, which complicates how #identity can be recognized or protected.
November 12, 2025 at 2:03 AM
It creates a contradiction: #FNMI #Indigenous identity is supposed to be internally determined, yet it’s still constrained by #colonial structures. Can you separate them when colonialism is still operating?
November 12, 2025 at 1:59 AM
If #sovereignty is incomplete, saying “your Nation decides” doesn’t fully protect the integrity of #Indigenous identity, because the Nation itself is limited by external forces.
November 12, 2025 at 1:58 AM
Knowing someone personally doesn’t automatically validate someone’s #FNMI #Indigenous identity either, nor does it override #genealogical or #community-based protocols. It’s anecdotal, localized, and can’t be applied as a universal standard. So again, contradictions are everywhere.
November 12, 2025 at 1:54 AM
Strictly following the “ #Nation claims you” model reduces the scope of who counts as #Indigenous to a much smaller, often geographically constrained population. It also highlights a tension between formal #sovereignty #self-governance on reserves and the lived realities of many.
November 12, 2025 at 1:08 AM
If “ #Indigeneity” for #FNMI is determined strictly by band membership or the Nation’s formal claim, then #Indigenous identity becomes heavily tied to reserve based communities, because most Nations governance and membership decisions are structured around their reserves.
November 12, 2025 at 1:06 AM
Many #FNMI rely on tools like #bloodquantum, #DNA tests, or legal paperwork mechanisms introduced or shaped by #colonial systems to make these determinations. Others use #kinship, #claiming or both. It raises the question: can a process still be fully sovereign if it uses colonial instruments?
November 12, 2025 at 12:58 AM
There are several people with ambiguous #Indigenous #FNMI backgrounds, who are claimed by families on reserves or #Nations. At the same time, #genealogical research and #genetic evidence show that some of these individuals also have #European ancestry.
November 12, 2025 at 12:51 AM
This tension highlights the difference between familial claiming and formal, and political claims by #FNMI leadership and it underscores how complex and sometimes contradictory the question of #Indigenous belonging can be.

There’s a #contradiction around Buffy's #connection to the #Piapot #FirstNation. On one hand, some of her adoptive Piapot family publicly affirm that they claim her as part of their family. On the other hand, the Nation’s acting Chief has publicly stated that she should take a DNA test to clarify.
November 12, 2025 at 12:42 AM
People say only #Nations can #claim someone. By that logic, #Buffy Sainte-Marie would still be #Piapot, wouldn’t she?

#FNMI folks living off reserve are often creating their own #community #governance, #ceremonies, and #language networks in the city sometimes even more freely, because they’re not under the #IndianAct’s control or local #politics. Those are still acts of #sovereignty and #resurgence.
November 11, 2025 at 8:22 PM
Many reserves today are homes of #ceremony, #language, and #traditionalprotocol. Those are vital and deserve respect. But the idea that those practices can only exist there or that everyone must relate to them in the same way that’s where the #colonial logic quietly creeps back in.

Being ‘connected to the rez’ doesn’t make someone more or less #Indigenous; it just means they’re surviving a different side of the same #system.

That urban #Indigenous resurgence has often been the most #decolonial work without the support of recognized land bases or #government structures. However, #appropriation & #panIndigenous frameworks dont work.

That missionization and #Christian schooling shaped many #reserve communities deeply. That #colonial moral codes around gender, family, and “authenticity” still influence community politics.
