PARTING GIFTS OF EMPIRE PALESTINE AND INDIA AT THE DAWN OF DECOLONIZATION by ESMAT ELHALABY Acknowledgments More than 410 days into a genocide in Gaza, I must acknowledge-at the outset-that this work is not particularly urgent. This book is about ideas and writing, and the social conditions, or social history, of intellectuals in the colonized world. Those conditions today are being transformed. For hundreds of intellectuals in Gaza, their condition now is simply a shallow grave or rotting beneath the rubble of their own homes. It is impossible to account for the family, friends, and colleagues killed by Israel. There is not, probably, enough paper in the world. But I cannot begin to thank all the people who made this book possible without first acknowledging at least those in my immediate family who were recently murdered by the Israeli state in Gaza: Sahar Abushaban, Mohammad Abushaban, Rana Abushaban, Nabila Elhalaby, Hani Ageela, Ashraf Abushaban, Essam Abushaban, Adly Elhalaby, and Basheer Alashi. Until liberation.
