Historian of 17th-18thc gender, medicine and sexuality at Newcastle University. Precarious ECR. Powered by tea, feminism and florid 18thc prose. Views mine.
Homeward bound after a fabulous time at LAPASEC 2025. Very reluctant to return to real life tbh. So many great papers and conversations, joyous from start to finish. Huge thanks to the organisers!

BSECS levels of fun, on an intimate scale. Highly recommend 😄 ❤️ @lapasec.bsky.social

Fab start to LAPASEC 2025! Super excited to finally make it after intending to for so long 😄

Possible collateral damage, insofar as Hotel Essener Hof has already ruined me for standard conference catering... @lapasec.bsky.social

TIL that nearly 197 years ago, Anne Lister "incurred a cross"* while thinking about her girlfriend in the back of a carriage, just down the road from here. God I love primary sources 😂

What's going on in America right now is genuinely terrifying. This is straight out of the fascist playbook, with no attempt to disguise it. Solidarity to the trans, queer and research communities, especially in the US. This is horrendous. #AcademicSky

A full house in Pembroke College's Chapel for the annual BSECS concert! This year, the programme features the Warleggan Village Band who will be performing #18thc dance music. Many thanks to Richard Heacock, Matthew Coatsworth, and @greenmatthewsuk.bsky.social! #BSECS2025

My phone has been dying or dead for most of #BSECS2025, leaving me unable to enthuse in real time, but it’s been an absolutely fab few days! Innumerable great conversations, and huge props to the organisers.

I expect to be declared legally dead any minute, but I regret none of my choices 😄

Hugely excited by the @bsecs.bsky.social draft conference programme this morning! Panels I want to see stacked three deep. Enthusiasts about the body, medicine etc will be spoilt for choice 😁

Blimey. I'd forgotten how square-eyed I go down the ECCO mines 😵‍💫 Definitely greenery, gentle bimbling and no screens time!

Todays' best find: Jean Astruc, c. 1760, musing on WTF was with ancient medics' counterintuitive silence on nymphomania. Weirdly similar to my own work - 260 years on, I'm pondering similar re Astruc's peers.

Always struck me as a sensible man, Astruc. Wondering now what he'd make of it 😅 #HistSTM

I've just done a big revision of my post on the #intersex person Margaret Bradley of (aptly) Middlesex. Exploring the scholarship has shown this is rare evidence indeed, one of only a handful of intersex individuals documented in Europe before 1550. Read! Repost! consistory.org/2018/05/14/b...

Marriage was the recommended cure for centuries – but it could not be sold by the bottle or pill!
