Arguing since birth. Urban planning, politics, weather, Drag Race, and photography are all fair game. Opinions are strictly my own—unless others agree. I assume that strings of emojis in people's bios are their washing instructions
We used to be great. We used to make clipper ships. I don't know why America stopped making clipper ships. We used to have sleek beautiful ships. Now we have big ugly ships. Xi will take one look at those beautiful ships and say, "You win. We can't sink it. Too beautiful. Taiwan, we don't need it."
Trump claims that ultimately he plans to build "20 to 25" new battleships

It is so, so far past time that we stop assuming any sort of good faith by right-wingers and their various economic/media elite handmaidens

"You are trying to turn the US into a dictatorship because you're hoping to be a part of the regime and/or benefit from it."

We need to practice saying that

Here is a question left NIMBYs will never be able to answer well:

If developers can you use housing development to drive up the cost of housing, why don't they go buy up entire blocks in rust belt cities, add a bunch of new houses, and then profit from the increased housing costs and land values?

Before you post your hot take about how we shouldn't have transportation options that can be impacted by a power outage, consider that BART and Muni stations affected by the power outage do not have service and that traffic in general is gridlocked due to a lack of operative signals

People who are like, "I know you can't afford healthcare, childcare, or to move out of your parents' house, but TVs and clothes are so cheap!" are just so endlessly tiresome

It's like saying America has no poverty because everyone can now afford royal amounts of black pepper and cinnamon

I couldn't be more pleased to report that @thejinkx.bsky.social and @bendelacreme.bsky.social have just this very evening been officially sainted by the San Francisco chapter of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence!

Can I get an amen?
December 20, 2025 at 5:27 AM
I know it's off topic, but the fact that creating this park has been such a pitched battle in maximally liberal San Francisco shows why all those people who screech "Boo EVs! Boo AVs! Ban all cars!" are deluded in their demands that the distant perfect be the enemy of some immediate good

Transit sweaters UNITE!

Lovely to see @therealjeanwalsh.bsky.social @rebeccaforec.bsky.social @georgespies.bsky.social @shegabme.bsky.social and more at the car-free happy hour in Berkeley last night!

(The background was drab, so I cheated and used a little open-source holidAI magic!)

This is a post birth abortion bill

It puts children in danger of self harm by forcing upon them identities that just don't fit

It's cruel, needless, and (in addition to being the fault of the GOP) the fault of opportunists like @gavinnewsom.bsky.social who want to throw trans people under the bus
BREAKING: The House of Representatives passed a bill that would criminalize gender-affirming care for transgender youth under 18 and put doctors in prison for providing this care.

This bill is an unjustifiable threat to the well-being of trans youth and their families. The Senate must reject it.

I keep saying this but no one is connecting the dots. The war is to satisfy legal preconditions for mass removal *domestically* of Latinos (i.e., suddenly a lot of people are going to be “Venezuelan” for purposes of removal). This is 100% Stephen Miller…oil claim is to make grandpa go along
There is no national security logic that would impel the US to want to do regime change in Venezuela. It's simply not that important. I'm not even sure wag the dog is the right metaphor for what's happening here. Seems like an insane misallocation of US national security assets and attention.
Trump: "Venezuela is completely surrounded by the largest Armada ever assembled ... It will only get bigger, and the shock to them will be like nothing they have ever seen before — Until such time as they return to the USA all of the Oil, Land, and other Assets that they previously stole from us."

If you want to understand why I don't think AI misinformation is the main thing we need to be worried about, take a look at the front pages of CNN, NYT and, WaPo

Trump is basically threatening a new Iraq War in Venezuela on social media, and the press is utterly silent

No AI needed to bury stories

I guess I'm coming out as a "pro-carceral urbanist"

I don't believe in retributive justice, but I do believe in protecting the public and using deterrence when it comes to dangerous irresponsible shit

Want to reject the idea people have agency? Fine. We should still stop them from driving drunk

I don't think people realize that the free and open internet is being dismembered piece by piece

This will probably lead to Youtube, Facebook, Instagram, and many others removing LGBTIQ content, censoring all but the most milquetoast of opinions, and possibly worse

Section 230 = online free speech
Sen. WHITEHOUSE: We finally are moving to file a bipartisan Section 230 repeal bill. Waiting any longer serves no useful purpose.

It's amazing how otherwise progressive people are willing to overlook a white dude's misinformation and erasure of a Black woman artist with a long-standing career because "AI ART BAD!"

Some people are so negatively polarized against AI art that they become pro-censorship

I love and respect @berkeleyside.org, but I'm really disappointed by the framing of this article

The student housing crisis and the UC's efforts to remedy it are relegated to the end of the article; and it subtly casts more aspersion on the UC pursuing the project than on the violent opposition

An under-discussed aspect of the "California Forever" grift is that it is tech elite attempting to plant a "Network State" seed in California

These people fundamentally don't believe in democracy, civic life, or mutual obligation. They believe in government by obscenely wealthy technologists (1/3)

In retrospect, building a political system that ultimately rewards preening, unprincipled career politicians who care more about staying in power and raising big-donor campaign funds than taking stands for the well-being of the people they represent was a really bad idea
Significant statement from Jeffries and House Democratic leaders saying they will vote “present” on the motion to table Al Green’s resolution to impeach President Trump. They say they’re “laser-focused on fighting to lower the high cost of living” plus on health care and corruption.

How hollow, how cowardly, how utterly without ethics or integrity do you have to be to knowingly lie like this before a congressional committee?

And in service of an incompetent, declining, bigoted rapist, no less
GLASHEEN: Antifa is our primary concern right now. That's the most immediate violent threat we're facing

BENNIE THOMPSON: Where is antifa headquartered?

GLASHEEN: ... ... ... we are building out the infrastructure right now

THOMPSON: What does that mean?

I find this outcome/article (semi-darkly) amusing because:

1) When Disney sued Midjourney, some of us warned it was (for better or worse) NOT about Disney fundamentally opposing generative AI

2) Disney (maybe) believes this gives them actual control?

Remember when we had a bunch of Very Smart People breathlessly telling us that college kids asking for content warnings were a huge threat to freedom of speech?

We should never again let nihilist centrists insist that we all engage the right as if it acts in good faith

This project should be utterly uncontroversial. It displaces nobody. It would bring back the grocery store. It's in a wealthy neighborhood that's not at risk of gentrification. It would provide below market rate units.

But because rich peoples' views are affected...

This one goes out to all the people who tut-tutted me and other progressives for years saying that we couldn't call these people fascists and Nazis

It also goes out to all the bad-faith merchants of death, who insisted that saturating the US with automatic weapons was a bulwark against tyranny

Y'all do realize that sharing the bad writing of a shameless attention seeker only helps them in the context of a media ecosystem whose entire modus operandi is shameless attention seeking, right?

At this point, nearly all mainstream media are more interested in clicks than truth and good writing
