I so often find putting together recital programs to be magical. Finding pieces from different time periods, different styles, composers of different backgrounds from different countries...yet they can all work together so beautifully.

It's the way the world could work too...if we wanted it to.

I'm putting together a program for an upcoming recital. On the program is a piece by Mel (Mélanie) Bonis. Do I list her as Mel, which is the name she used for publishing, or Mélanie?

Perhaps it seems like an insignificant question but I want to do what she would want if she were alive today.

I really enjoyed all of the pieces on my final Sightreading Maverick show yesterday. I especially enjoyed ending with the Tarantella by Samuel Maykapar.

we've been working thru the St Matthew Passion in my non-majors Bach course. Tuesday's our last day with it and as good a day as any, maybe the best day imaginable, to listen to Rhiannon Giddens singing American Tune—that old, old melody, its new words adjusted

Something I've noticed about myself in regards to performance anxiety.

The more I have invested in determining how I want to interpret a piece of music - phrasing, architecture of piece, mood, colors, etc... - the easier it is for me to focus on that during a performance.

Switching from using willpower to being stubborn can be helpful in the practice room and beyond.

Willpower opens the door to blaming oneself for not progressing. Stubbornness can shift the focus on the problem itself with you having the power to overcome it.

A custodian at the university where I work moved away this week. I missed saying goodbye to him but found this note on my desk. Meant the world to me to receive this.

Never question whether you should take a moment to leave words like this to someone. ❤️

The more we can see mistakes as stepping stones to solving problems and getting us to a better place, the easier we'll be on ourselves.

A favorite find on this past Sunday's sightreading show were some Toccatas by Leonardo Leo. Bright, bubbly, energetic, and not too difficult to read.

I traveled to Kentucky to see for myself what conductor Teddy Abrams is doing there. My conclusion: In a time of extreme division, he and the Louisville Orchestra are forging common ground in rural communities—& pointing a way forward for our embattled nation.

Makes sense. It is sightreading after all!
