Kropotkin thought that one pathway of state formation is "the sorcerer or the priest" seizes power from a military leader/judge who is beginning to construct a state. The sorcerer then joins "force and knowledge of customary law to his feared wizard power".

there are few things which manage to endlessly fascinate me the way that linguistics does

I could literally just look at phonemic inventories for different languages for the rest of my life and be happy

Colossal’s bungled wolf announcement isn’t a conservation win. It’s a sad reminder of how the offensively rich want to foist their vision of the future on everyone. My latest for @slate.com
Those Dire Wolves Aren’t an Amazing Scientific Breakthrough. They’re a Disturbing Symbol of Where We’re Heading.
We shouldn’t be celebrating “de-extinction.” We should be focused on the species that are currently in danger.

I’ve been listening to the audiobook version of Howard Zinn’s “A People’s History of the United States” and one of the major takeaways I really didn’t expect or think about is how incredibly fucked up the US entering WWI was, and how much it was used as a cudgel against radical movements

I personally think it’s extremely funny that there was once a point in my life where I was like “why is every furry that I see online gay? I’m gonna be the world’s first straight furry!”

really the only obstacle to that goal turned out to be how hot men are

idk if anyone can answer this, but like, why, specifically, is knowing about jury nullification grounds for someone to be removed from a jury? like, if the jury finds the defendant not guilty because a law is unjust or otherwise, is that not a “valid” outcome? what is the incentive here?

one of the things I really like about bluesky is it definitely feels like the kind of space that has many people who recognize we all share the same enemy, and fighting over exactly *why* we hate them is counterproductive to our shared goal of taking power away from them
