I wrote this commentary last week on New York City #mayor-elect #MamdaniZohran, who brought so many factors to politics we don't see often: fun, joy, hope, and guts.

No longer behind the paywall.

The Washington Post is just straight up spreading misinformation. Total witchcraft. Not a single person at the Post has any basis for the claim that "increased enforcement of tougher laws" either happened at all or reduced murder. Maybe someone should write a book about it...

Canada under Mark Carney, is “slipping into the robe of a petrostate, just like all the other petrostates.”https://www.nationalobserver.com/2025/11/20/opinion/canada-climate-policy-cop30
Carney’s calamitous course causes consternation at climate summit
Canada arrived at COP30 with empty hands, expressly moving backwards on almost every climate policy we’ve put in place since Paris.

It’s mind boggling that some of these council members don’t seem to understand that sometimes money needs to be spent to make life more affordable, and the city more attractive to actually live in.

i find it so off-putting when you watch journalists interviewing politicians and you can tell they’re friendly, all in a big club that doesn’t serve the public’s interests. access journalism is the opposite of accountability journalism.

elizabeth may saying she can vote for the budget because mark carney said he’s committed to the paris climate targets even as he guts climate policy and pushes a wave of massive fossil fuel projects is laughable.

the longer she stays, the more of a laughing stock the green party becomes.

The Coalition of the Irresponsible on council is essentially at the "endlessly going through the budget looking for Waste, Fraud, and Abuse" phase of things.

Halifax is mostly unique in the province in having density.

It mostly uses that density to keep taxes low.

It has used part of that surplus to... become less dense.

This makes budget math hard.
Halifax has crazy low taxes compared to other cities in Canada and other municipalities in Nova Scotia. Like we are an outlier in how low our taxes are.

Alberta and Ontario are the tip of the spear in dismantling our public healthcare system. The way it’s being reported makes it sound like they’re just doing a controversial move when they are sabotaging our healthcare system.

I love how Canadian provinces just have an option to go “Fuck the constitution, actually” for most things that’s constitutionally protected. Kinda makes our entire country a joke.

This country is a joke. Our constitution just allows governments to restrict rights. This was obviously where it was always going when the notwithstanding clause was agreed upon.

This general topic seems to sometimes fire people up because they focus on the outliers and not the median. There are of course seniors who are struggling and young people who are wealthy. You very correctly point out how much it’s a transfer of wealth from those who have little to the owning class
