Whoa -- just noticed NERC acknowledging a data error in its MISO numbers leading to a lot less reliability problems. Bad data leading to a wrong (and highly impactful) conclusion is my nightmare! Good on NERC for acknowledging and correcting the record! #EnergySky

Connecting infrastructure to the grid has been a passion since I worked on FERC's original Order 2003. Surplus interconnection is fast and provides states a tool to accelerate policy achievement even in the face of long queues. Great to work with ‪@mfarmer.bsky.social & the GridLab team!
With "surplus interconnection", energy resources can move through the process hook up to the system in months rather than the typical 5+ years. @energyabe.bsky.social and I have a new report with GridLab on how to advance its use: surplusinterconnection.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com/2025-02-21_G...

Who thinks the rise of DeepSeek will appreciably reduce data center demand growth? Leaving aside whether DeepSeek itself is a game-changer, is there a next generation of AI development that tries to work smarter, not harder, with the attendent decrease in electricity consumption?

New complaint re: PJM capacity prices from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania 👀🔥

Main argument is that "it is currently physically impossible for new resources to respond to high [auction] signals and enter PJM’s marketplace.”

Matching electricity consumption with the carbon intensity of the grid has great potential reduce emissions, and to improve how GHG impacts are measured. I was pleased to support a letter highlighting the potential and need for better metrics. 🔌💡 expertconsensusoncarbonimpact.com

Opinion piece at Utility Dive on how state and federal regulators need to work together to address data center costs and protect consumers, since neither can do it alone! Thanks to Sue Glatz and Mahala Lahvis for co-authoring. We make four points.

Can regulators protect small customers from rising transmission costs for big data centers?
Federal-state consensus is needed around whether to ring-fence non-data-center retail customers from the costs of expanding the transmission grid to meet data center load.

PJM's Board letter is a must-read for those interested in clean energy policy. The specific roadmap is important, but more relevant is the PJM's assertion that there is simply not enough clean energy to maintain reliability without new (likely gas) generation. 🔌💡

AD24-11 Recap: Constellation. Definitions wins wars! Consto loves "Fully Isolated Co-Located Load." Who could assess transmission charges on FICLLs"? Seriously, a thoughtful filing from Consto with several suggestions for steps FERC could take and some overtures on $ for ancillary services. 🔌💡

AD24-11 Recap: Talen argues colocaters should pay for transmiss. service to the extent it actively uses the grid (eg, on net load). Not surprising; but I suspect the economics would support paying transmission charges on gross load. Speed + regulatory certainty > minimizing costs, no? 🔌💡

AD24-11 Recap: Agree with AEU's point that co-location is largely a symptom of a dysfunctional grid & we need an "all of the above" approach to resource adequacy. Less convinced that large BTM loads reduce congestion - but feel free to correct me #energysky! elibrary.ferc.gov/eLibrary/fil...

AD24-11 recap: Data Center Coalition's comments are refreshing: "Put simply, if upgrades or services are provided by the grid to serve the co-located load, DCC supports those services being paid for by the co-located load." They also take on load forecasting and iX reform. 🔌💡
