So proud and in admiration of my friend @manuelsalgado.bsky.social for being a huge part in making something so important and transformative! Please share and contribute, as @weact4ej.bsky.social & @greenlatinos.org want this to be a living document, where others share their stories.
With mere hours left to go in Hispanic Heritage Month, we put the finishing touches on our storymap we created with our partners @greenlatinos.org that celebrates the contributions Latinos have made to Environmental Justice. It is but a portion of the story but I really hope you'll engage with it.
Hispanic Heritage Month 2025
Editor’s Note: The extent of Hispanic and Latino/a/e peoples is broad and multidimensional.  Although many will try to describe us as homogenous and as one in the same, we recognize that could not be ...

Pls share: I'm seeking ornithologists willing to comment about how the Bird Banding Lab &/or Breeding Bird Survey are crucial to their research & conservation efforts, for a piece for @therevelator.org defending these programs. Reply, DM, or email me at rebecca dot heisman at gmail. #ornithology

Wish my first quote in the Post was in better circumstances, but it is important for people to understand what is coming so that environmental justice and community organizations are supported when they need it: financially, legally, and otherwise. wapo.st/3Dgyyu0
What Trump’s second administration could mean for environmental justice
President Joe Biden promised to devote 40 percent of money dedicated to cutting pollution to poor, often non-White areas. The program could be cut under Trump.

Tried to find Emily under her handle from the old site, forgot she’s got a new one here: @emilystudiesbirds.bsky.social

Here’s an episode where she talks about her work: bsky.app/profile/abab...
The American Robin is ubiquitous but there's a lot left to learn. Emily Williams, an avian ecologist at Georgetown University, is studying their migration ecology.

What we don’t know about a bird everyone knows.

I’m never online anymore but sharing that I got to see @edyong209.bsky.social tonight is definitely worth posting about - what a joy to hear him talk about animal sensory worlds & how learning more about them has influenced his own! 🦉🪶🧪

This episode made the rounds again & I had a number of folks reach out asking Qs - @n8swick.bsky.social can verify, but I think this episode was recorded sometime in late 2021 - before I really had any data. 3 years later I have a lot more to share. 🦉🧪 con'd

Hey POTUS, the birds I study couldn’t be more American - these GPS-tagged American Robins have chosen to visit President’s Park bc they would very much like to discuss how we can be more #birdfriendly . Can we please consider #climatechange policies? #science #birds 🪶🧪

Does anyone know whether free (or covered by insurance) PCR testing for covid is still available? Doesn’t look like CVS offers it anymore, & Walgreens doesn’t take my insurance. Any ideas welcome! #covid #covid19

I don't know which makes me laugh harder, the amount of water an American Robin can soak up during a bath or the gloriously grumpy looking expression on this one.

Those who have been following along w/ my robin research have heard me say that robins have capitalized on basically every non-aquatic habitat within North America. Let me present to you today, the Coastal Robin, hanging out in a tiny spit of land on Fire Island, NY. #ornithology 🦉🧪

When I was in New Brunswick, Canada earlier this summer for my American Robin fieldwork, I added a new study site. As many of you know, a large majority of my study sites are people's backyards. #ornithology #birds 🦉🧪

This makes me so happy. 25 yrs ago when I was 11, I did a sea turtle rehab summer camp at the MarineLife Ctr.The turtle numbers were nothing like that then. That experience made a huge impact on me & still does-I've loved sea turtles ever since & still want to be a marine biologist when I grow up!🦑🧪

Big shoutout to the huge collective of folks who worked hard for #BirdNames4Birds. I was honored to share my excitement in this article by AP writer Christina Larson: apnews.com/article/bird...
Ornithological society to rename dozens of birds — and stop naming them after people
Birds in North America will no longer be named after people. The American Ornithological Society announced the move Wednesday.

Plants, insects, mammals, buildings, statues, & beyond! Hopefully the collective action of the bird community will be the kick in the butt for other organizations to follow!!

100% Wilson's Warbler should be Toupee'd Warbler
i'd like to see wobblin' hawk (swainson's) and bonneted/chapeud warbler (wilson's). also while we're at it we should rename the robin to american thrush

currently discussing re-naming the vireos in a group chat I'm in. I propose bell's vireo be the Shrubby Vireo (or White-Spectacled Vireo), Cassin's can be Cinereous Vireo. Hutton's can be Kinglet Vireo. Yeah yeah?
I did this on the other app, but I'm going to do it on this one too because I've changed my mind on a few of these.

With a nod towards the recent bird names news, let's rename some birds.

I've started to realize a lot of my fav science writers are birders or have become birders *cough* @edyong209.bsky.social *cough* & it makes me happy. Clearly being a writer & appreciating birds goes hand in hand, no?
(as I say this to myself in hopes of writing in less academia-stuffy spaces...)

My vote is that we take the lead after whoever was responsible for naming the majority of hummingbirds. I want more sunbeams and brilliants on my life list 😉
Rivoli's Hummingbird back to MAGNIFICENT HUMMINGBIRD

This was a great name that never should have reverted to the old version. If the AOS kept Canada Goose when Cackling split, they should have kept Magnificent when they split Talamanca.
