I’m never online anymore but sharing that I got to see @edyong209.bsky.social tonight is definitely worth posting about - what a joy to hear him talk about animal sensory worlds & how learning more about them has influenced his own! 🦉🪶🧪

Hey POTUS, the birds I study couldn’t be more American - these GPS-tagged American Robins have chosen to visit President’s Park bc they would very much like to discuss how we can be more #birdfriendly . Can we please consider #climatechange policies? #science #birds 🪶🧪

Those who have been following along w/ my robin research have heard me say that robins have capitalized on basically every non-aquatic habitat within North America. Let me present to you today, the Coastal Robin, hanging out in a tiny spit of land on Fire Island, NY. #ornithology 🦉🧪

laden w/ wires & a microphone &interviews us right there on the spot, as we're multitasking w/ nets & poles in our hands. I can't promise I was totally coherent but I don't think the recording sounds half bad! link is here: tinyurl.com/canadarobins

Here I thought we'd sit down somewhere quiet in his house where he has all the acoustics situated so that the sound quality is good for public radio. Alas - that was not the case. As we get started setting up nets in his yard, he tromps out of his house with muck boots on...🦉🧪

This new backyard I added happened to be owned by someone who has a weekly column on the CBC radio, featuring birdy content. Alain asked if he could interview me & my field assistant. 🧪🦉

When I was in New Brunswick, Canada earlier this summer for my American Robin fieldwork, I added a new study site. As many of you know, a large majority of my study sites are people's backyards. #ornithology #birds 🦉🧪

We found that ants & cetaceans were the most important disturbers & disturbance foraging was greatest in areas of high biodiversity. Since these areas contain threated ecosystems, it's paramount that we conserve these habitats bc it also means conserving these important interactions. 🧪

We review instances between species where we find what we define as disturbance foraging - the act of obtaining food at a disturbance created by another organism. What was really cool was just how widespread this behavior was globally & across the animal kingdom 🦉🦑🧪
