Im seeing discussions about consultations with congress, authorizations of force etc. I have to say this transcends any of what I would call sub constitutional technicalities. The president has gone to war with a foreign power and, it seems, kidnapped a foreign head of state on the basis of nothing.

We need to make being an ignorant, misinformed, bigoted sociopathic chud a social deadend and societal marker of the worst kind of person imaginable.

Elevating and establishing communities that actually value honesty, openness, and basic humanity is a necessity. Vice signaling is mind killer.
Today on Volts: I've got a nerdy one for you! I talk with political scientist @samuel-bagg.bsky.social about the epistemic crisis & its roots in social identity. He explains why factchecking & media literacy classes will never solve misinformation -- why something deeper & stronger is required.
The cure for misinformation is not more information or smarter news consumers
Political scientist Samuel Bagg explains why social identity is at the root of the misinformation crisis -- which calls for something deeper than factchecking.

I submit that the reactionary mind yearns for a past it does not know or understand, but a flattened, bowdlerized version that dispenses of struggle, resistance, life: the political. The core of that retelling is that dominant people were effortlessly in control, without contestation. It may well
Side note: Sinatra’s mom Natalina “Dolly” Garaventa, a midwife by trade, ran an underground free abortion clinic, chained herself to a fence to fight for women’s suffrage and was an extremely influential organizer for the Democratic Party

Abandonen esa plataforma.

This. Post-politics, or antipolitics, or whatever is called, is tilted field, asymmetrical warfare.
Sometimes it sucks being the only party that is connected to reality, making actual policy, or being held accountable for promises!

That's why I say that, at its core, reactionary politics is not an alternative set of values, norms, & rules -- it is permission to *jettison* values, to ignore the dreary call of conscience, to wallow in impulse & instinct. It can't triumph via persuasion (it sounds awful out loud), only violence.

If I have a choice -- one one side, middle-aged academic author with grand 3-volume tome on How to Create the Perfect World (I get two or three of these *a week*); on the other side, someone who boosted heat pump uptake in midsized NYC multifamily buildings by 17% -- I choose the latter every time.

@cwarzel.bsky.social writes a moving final paragraph to a somber, indispensable article: "The loss of friction deprives people of something crucial. What happens between imagination and creation is ineffable—it entails struggle, iteration, joy, and frustration, disappointment, and pride. 1/2

"normies do not care about this thing and so it is no use raising a stink" is imho just an excuse for not doing politics, which is the job of making normies care about something

I really value the public service value in the constant, unsuccessful, painstaking reexposition of this core assessment of how political language works now by Roberts. I feel you, David.
Such a characteristic dynamic, righties saying the protests were "funded by Soros" and lefties responding with fact checks & empirical observations. Ships passing in the night.

What the righties want to say is: the left is fundamentally illegitimate. That, to them, is the core truth.

I would even go so far as to say the very core of fascism is an elevation of raw male emotions -- the two-sided coin of drippy nostalgia & butthurt fury. The whole point of fascism is to say: trust those emotions, those instincts, they are pure & right, don't examine or get any distance from them.
