Art and nature lover in Yorkshire. Lifelong writer ✍️🏻 poetry and fiction.
Editing some poems into a collection. Words I have used too much across pieces: adrift, collide and artifice.

Writers, share your recurring words and phrases? Do you enjoy the editing process?

Full Moon Movements 🌕

Communing in dark, humid rooms,
meeting our bodies where they land
and making new space, growth.
Bending and twisting into imperfect
shapes, it becomes something ritual,
finding the eye of the storm.

The seasons are disrupted,
I remain trapped in frost,
in the world of the dead.
Come daylight, my fears
will melt into nothing,
but in this gloom they
twist into night hags.
The black chariot drags
me to the underworld;
death and the maiden,
my body held hostage.

Hidden below the brutalist
pebbledash monument,
warm clay bricks by
green water and rushes.
Flowers spill over balconies,
couples talking shyly on
first dates. A refuge from
the towering walls of
glass and metal, those
sculptures of ambition.

You walked into the bookshop
where I worked, thousands of
miles from where we met
in the shadows of giants.
Sometimes I catch your voice
on the wind, long since we
parted ways. Unintentional
choices - one day is the last
time for everything.

Drowned trees in the hinterland,
pale skeletons rising from water.
Mottled bodies wrap around
branches, hunting unseen.
Strange birds whoop and laugh
somewhere above. The red earth,
nourished by volcanic eruption,
spawns greenery and a riot of life.

Back from down under, after rest and reunion. We saw rainforests, golden beaches, and migrating whales. 🌏

I sit in one of the dives
On Fifty-second Street
Uncertain and afraid
As the clever hopes expire
Of a low dishonest decade:
Waves of anger and fear
Circulate over the bright
And darkened lands of the earth...

The faded grandeur is
inescapable, infused
with melancholy.
The industrial wasteland,
the ruined warehouses
and shuttered pubs cast
long shadows over
everything. We were
promised more, but who
can afford a quiet life?
We are fuel for their
modern machinery.

The city shone like
a beacon over the
black hills, past the
church spires. It's lure
is irresistible, the sirens
keep me awake.
I talk to alcoholics about
Shakespeare and teach
myself to lucid dream.
Weightless as a ghost,
I fall into a labyrinth of
neon and mirrors.

The unrealness and grotesque parade of reality experienced through a screen. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
My Brain Finally Broke
Much of what we see now is fake, and the reality we face is full of horrors. More and more of the world is slipping beyond my comprehension.

On the hilltops, under
old oak and ash trees,
I feel content. Hopeful
houses in rows along
the hurrying river,
a meeting place for
makers, artists and
free thinkers.
There's so much
optimism and grit
in the steel bones
of the place.
