The Filles du Roi came to the colony in a program sponsored by King Louis XIV to boost the population of New France.
Their descendants include Madonna, Angelina Jolie and Bernie Geoffrion.

On this day in 1941, Yousuf Karsh took The Roaring Lion portrait of Churchill in the Speaker's Chamber of the House of Commons. He captured the stern look by taking the cigar out of Churchill's mouth right before taking the photo. The portrait is now on the British £5 banknote.
