I really enjoy writing romantic relationships where everyone involved has their own interests and responsibilities that exist independently of their partner(s). There are so many ways to show devotion, and "I consciously choose to make time for you" happens to be one of my favorites.

The long, shaky exhalation that answered him had the ragged edge of someone who was trying not to cry and failing miserably at it. "I want to; please believe that. I want to more badly than I've wanted anything in a long time." "Then let me in." B'alith pressed kisses against Koana's forehead, his nose, each of his cheeks, kissing away the tears that he could not keep from spilling over and accepting them as the sacred offering he knew it to be. "Let me in." He trailed kisses along Koana's jaw, fingers threading into the deep green curls at the nape of his neck to cradle his head more firmly. "Let me in," B'alith murmured, over and over, lips brushing across every place he could reach, lingering over every spot that the Vow of Reason had taught him would coax out a shiver, a gasp, a brief moment of surrender. Koana was breathless and trembling by the time B'alith reached his mouth, clutching at his hips and leaning in to meet each touch, trying to close the distance between them to let himself be claimed. That this was a reversal of the way they usually were with each other was clearly not lost on either of them—Koana preferred to take the active role when they were in bed together, but in this moment it was he who needed to let himself receive. The last of the tension finally went out of his shoulders. "I suppose it's time to fall, then," he said, his voice thick with a mixture of emotion and desire. "Here I am. Come and catch me."

For me, one of the first things I have to nail down is a scent profile. The way a character smells can tell me so much about what they surround themselves with, where they're from, how (or if) they take care of themselves, what they find comforting or alluring, and so on. It all stems from scent.
