I tell my students explicitly to NOT do this and then I explain why - full of hallucinations, stolen material, mischaracterizations.
What about this is controversial? Beginning an inquiry by using AI to survey material is a very normal and appropriate use.

100% agree!

And the thing I’m most proud of doesn’t have a link to share yet, but it’s almost done! I’ve been leading a time of computer scientists and medievalists to create an HCR for Medieval Latin legal records, like those digitized at AALT (example below).

Sounds good!

Dreaming of this for the charters, etc at Riksarkivet!
This is going to be so helpful for research and teaching. I can’t wait till it’s up and running.

Having said this, I’d be much obliged if you could go back in time two decades and make it available for me before I began transcribing thousands of thirteenth-century cases!

"[N]ot only is “AI” not especially new; protesting it has a long history. Inspired by the collective objection represented in this photo, we are calling for resistance to the AI industry’s ongoing capture of higher education."
"We envision a resistance that is...a repudiation of the efficiencies that automated algorithmic education falsely promises: a resistance comprising the collective force of small acts of friction."

Värt att påminna om den hårda & rättvisa kritik som @malinmichea.bsky.social och @kuggla.bsky.social riktade mot Historiska museet. Tog någon utställningen i försvar?

Hittills har vi alltså tre kandidater anmälda till tävlingen "AI-klantigaste kulturarvsinstitutionen 2025". Anmälan öppen till jul!

I wasn't even thinking this fireplace was in the church itself, but the vestibule or sacristy (I know I've seen a reference to a heater somewhere).
But in the meantime I will be imagining a medieval (Byzantine) baptistry filled with beer...

I wonder what you mean here. Warm up your cup of water by the fire and it's not that much colder really. We now know that this idea of "no one drank water in the Middle Ages" is not entirely accurate.
I always assumed it was more that people assumed any liquid would do but of course water is best.

This one always amuses me as I assume it was a reaction to an actual event. :)

We are ten days out from Christmas which means that if you are Welsh, it's the time of year when a skeleton horse might show up at your door and challenge you to a rap battle.

If you lose the horse gets to come inside and drink your booze.

Happy Christmas from Mari Lwyd!
