Yes. CPD offered Chicagoans upwards of a thousand dollars to support erecting a surveillance state and local media did absolutely no favors amping up crime wave hysteria.
Ring’s national expansion closely tracked Amazon’s own established growth strategy: ignoring near term profit to secure platform dominance. It did this by subsidizing the devices through police-driven distribution (literally free giveaways for people willing to download its neighborhood snitch app)
They badly bungled this. There are many applications of this technology (Missing child! Missing dementia patient! Abusive ex-husband kidnapped the kids! Dzhokhar Tsarnaev!) that most people would likely support if they trusted the company not to abuse the tech. 1/2
