Amanda Pritchard said on BBC Radio: “We need to think much more radically, particularly about capital…I think we now must consider private capital investment in the NHS…if we don’t fix our buildings, if we don’t fix our technology we’re not going to... really drive that long term improvement"

Important to note, that both measure only the volume of activity hospitals do, not actual health outcomes. Therefore any NHS investment which keep people healthier and out of hospital in the first place (what most of us want) just count as a cost and would, perversely, lower the productivity figure.

This is both fascinating and exasperating. NHS England say NHS acute hospital productivity us up +2.4% on last year, ONS says it's down -3.6%. Have we ever had such widely varying official data informing policy-making?
Today the ONS have published new estimates of UK healthcare productivity. They estimate that productivity has declined substantially, while last week NHS England estimated that English acute hospital productivity has increased. What’s going on? A short thread
