Hi! I study DNA from museum specimens and fossils to see how animals are responding to change in the environment. This is a cave in Madagascar where bones of extinct species can help us in our research #ScienceIsForEveryone #ScienceSelfie

It's an old and obvious pattern. An unpopular president - failing on the economy and losing his grip on power at home - decides to launch a war for regime change abroad.

The American people don’t want to “run” a foreign country while our leaders fail to improve life in this one.

Uncertainty and belligerence, indeed. ❤️‍🩹

U.S. military spending is set to hit a record $1 trillion.

Roughly half of defense spending goes to private contractors that routinely price-gouge the government.

Meanwhile, the Pentagon has failed EIGHT straight audits.

This is the military industrial complex on steroids.

"American sweat, ingenuity and toil created the oil industry in Venezuela. Its tyrannical expropriation was the largest recorded theft of American wealth and property."

He's not hiding it.

They're claiming Venezuelan oil BELONGS to America because US companies developed it 100 years ago 12/

#Venezuela has the the largest oil reserves in the world, in the form of the extra-heavy oil of the Orinoco belt, which is as expensive as it is polluting to extract.

Regime change in Iraq, Afghanistan, & Libya killed millions of innocent people—all for oil.

Trump admits his goal is to take over Venezuela to control their oil. 40 people have already died in Trump’s bombings, and if he isn’t stop that number will skyrocket.

This is why I fear for Venezuela.

I’ve been working full time to stop this war since last summer and the one scenario I feared the most is materializing — Trump is making a play for Venezuela’s oil. I’m not saying an insurgency will definitely form, but Trump’s ploy creates the perfect storm for an absolutely disastrous occupation.🧵
Trump: "We're going to have our very large United States oil companies go in, spend billions of dollars, fix the badly broken infrastructure and start making money for the country. And we are ready to stage a second and much larger attack if we need to do so."

Trump keeps lying about how Venezuela “stole” from US oil companies. Here’s what really happened. Venezuelans know their own history & that’s why Trump’s oil gambit could become the focal point of a resistance. They won’t unite for Maduro, but they could come together to defend their patrimony.🧵
This is why Venezuelans nationalized their oil over generations:

“The right-wing strongman Juan Vicente Gómez, the military dictator who ruled Venezuela from 1908 until his death in 1935, granted concessions that left three foreign oil companies in control of 98% of the Venezuelan market.“
FACT CHECK American companies never owned oil or land in Venezuela, and officials didn’t kick them out. Venezuela, following Mexico, Brazil and Saudi Arabia, nationalized its most lucrative sector in 1976 and developed mutually beneficial partnerships with American and other firms

The US invasion of Venezuela is against international law and it is against US law. It represents a monumental breakdown of rules-based order. Failure to condemn it in the strongest terms possible – and failure to impeach and convict Trump is to be complicit with his barbarism and despotism.

let's pretend, for the sake of a particularly stupid argument, that this is true and Trump ordered a military incursion to kidnap a foreign leader to distract from the Epstein files. So what? This is a monstrous, illegal act and divining his motives doesn't change anything.
Schumer: "It makes you think that maybe to Trump he wants to distract the American people, as he always does, from the skyrocketing costs they are facing, from the Epstein files."
