A few years back, I wrote the intro for a new ed of Zelda Fitzgerald’s novel, SAVE ME THE WALTZ. A few months ago, the press decided to close. Their books, including this one, will only be available in the US through 12/24.

I don’t make $ from sales, but I’m very proud of this book.

Read about WHY Ketanji Brown Jackson stayed the SNAP order. Her move is probably the best solution for getting SNAP benefits approved quickly. open.substack.com/pub/stevevla...
190. SNAP WTF?
A very quick explainer on what (and why) Justice Jackson issued an "administrative stay" in the SNAP case late on Friday night, and on what's likely to happen next

A devastating set of decisions on the part of UC leadership to withdraw support from our nationally recognized postdoc program that prioritizes research excellence combined with addressing our university public service mission. www.insidehighered.com/news/faculty...
UC to Stop Funding Systemwide Postdoc Program
Established in 1984 to encourage women and minority Ph.D.s to pursue academia, the program has attracted right-wing criticism for prioritizing diverse candidates.

Okay, I am tooting my horn because this book includes
- stuff about sheriff elections and civilian oversight and why they dont work
- a whole chapter about the push on the right to criminalize voters (which is what Trump's threat of a voting executive order does)

I would point an interested reader and careful thinker to two things.

One, the university recently built another top-down school without student demand or sustainable funding. It isn’t doing so well.

Two, I would point out that sports dynasties are built over generations.

Ah yes, air traffic controllers must show up for work without pay, but Congress can take the day off. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy says he’ll be making “necessary cuts” to the department, because nothing fixes staffing shortages quite like firing more people.

I think about digital security in the age of autocracy a lot. This thread from 7 months ago needs some updating and grain. I am especially concerned about folks working in higher education, most of whom are still in denial as to the degree to which they are being surveilled.
I do not think of myself as privacy zealot but compared to my family, friends & colleagues I guess I am. Here’s my really basic low level toolkit (feel free to add recommendations or correct me on anything I get wrong, but despite what my friends think I want to keep it as simple as possible)

1/.
How to get your friends and family to talk about internet privacy without sounding like the tinfoil hat dork they already think I am?
