Eine Übergangsphase? Wohin?
„Die EU kann sich von dem passiven, sozusagen ins Glied zurückgetretenen Nato-Mitglied USA politisch nicht entfernen, obgleich das zur Folge hat, dass ,der Westen‘ noch gemeinsam handelt, aber normativ nicht mehr mit einer Stimme spricht.“

Today’s world is not monolinguistic. Reporting in the English speaking world is often skewed in favour of English language sources. English seems to be the only language that is readily understood and transported. Journalists rarely follow the news in other languages thereby narrowing their horizon.

Europe will never “speak with one voice”. But a well managed coalition of the able and the willing is the instrument of choice when the chips are down. This coalition must not loose touch with the wider circle of 27 but it needs to act bolder than they ever could or would. For the sake of Europe!
To put this more bluntly, Europe has largely outsourced its foreign policy to America since WWII. This has created the illusion within the EU that foreign policy remains a national “competency.” It’s not. So if Europe wants a bigger voice it needs to speak as Europe.
Europe has a foreign policy problem. It does need to engage in these talks and doing so as 7 or 8 leaders just doesn't work. It makes it easy to work around Europe. So the EU should pick a special envoy - perhaps the fmr Finnish president Niinisto or a Draghi type to engage on behalf of Europe.

…and so has Merz
Secretary of State Marco Rubio: “We're making some changes to the peace plan after talks with Ukraine.”

Meanwhile, Starmer has spoken to Trump twice in the last 24 hours to try to influence events.

The Witkoff/Dmitriev package is designed to serve three objectives:
• give a quick win to Trump and Putin who for different reasons are both in need of some good news;
• shift responsibility for failure and all other longer-term consequences squarely to Europe;
• maximize US and RUS economic gain. 🙏

The Witkoff-Dmitriev plan is even more amateurish than I imagined. It favours Russia although does contain elements that Russia will not like. Premature leaking means that it is no more than work in progress. Here is an annotated version (This is free). open.substack.com/pub/samf/p/t...?

We now know a bit more about the process which led to the new peace plan and we now have a copy of its contents, to which I will turn soon.

Wake up Europe! NOW is the moment for Europe to block the joint attempt by Putin&Trump to undermine its independence with their self-serving deal. NOW - or it might well be too late.

Agree with the sentiment. Unfortunately, however, the present situation in Europe is characterized by confluence of infectious MAGA rot and external Russian threat.
Trump and his regime must perish for liberal democracy to survive. There is no way around this.
The rot emanating from him and his people is a stronger challenge for the free world than all external enemies.

Viele wollen es nicht verstehen oder wahr haben, aber die Äußerungen des Kanzlers haben enorme Kränkungen verursacht.

BS. Who cares about “a senior official”?
Trump has been secretly working with Putin to create a stitch-up peace deal which they will try to force on Ukraine.

As for Europe: “We don’t really care,” a senior official told Politico.

The Founders were so concerned about bribery that the Constitution forbids it three separate times. Two emoluments clauses ban officials—unambiguously including the president—from accepting things of value, plus bribery is the only named impeachable offense besides treason.

Unprecedentedly corrupt.
