As academic Bluesky assembles, here’s who I am: I’m an Associate Prof of Ed Leadership & Foundations at UTEP. I study community colleges, postsecondary curriculum and pedagogy, two-year college faculty, Latinx/e students, and HSIs. I’m active in ASHE, AERA, and the Council for the Study of CCs.
A milestone in my career.

Kevin Bazner and I contributed a piece to the latest issue of the American Historical Review on using digital archives to study the histories of HSIs. At a time when MSIs are losing hundreds of millions of $ in federal funds, looking to the past reminds me that history is never a straight line.

Adventures of living with my parents: they’re watching Highest 2 Lowest in the other room, and I hear my mom go, “that’s A-S-A-P Rocky. Do you know who he is? He’s a big rapper.”

M’am, did you just spell out A$AP? 🤣

I’m now at my third university as a professional, and I say with my whole chest: it is a truth universally acknowledged that doctoral students will wait until the absolute last minute to register for classes. 😆

El Paso, Texas: the only place I know of where you go to a Chinese buffet and find hot and sour soup, egg drop soup, and menudo.

My mother got suckered to be on the planning committee for her 60th HS reunion. Today, I hear her say, “All my high school boyfriends have died. I have no one to look forward to seeing.” 😆

Public shoutout to my homie and fellow troublemaker @drcriss-salinas.bsky.social and the incredible work he’s doing with the Journal of Hispanic Higher Education. I got a rejection this morning, but the feedback was really helpful and constructive! I appreciate his leadership in this venue!

There’s something very comforting in knowing that if I was Julie Delpy in Before Sunrise, even now in my 40s, I still would choose to get off the train in Vienna with Jesse.

Had a zoom with @dreasmith.bsky.social scheduled for an hour to talk about one project turned into an over three hour meeting where we decided on a whole ass research agenda. The conversation only ended because my laptop died. 😂 I am PUMPED.

Dear Ticketmaster,

bring back the print at home option for tickets. It’s a burden to use the phone sometimes.

@drsaguilarsmith.bsky.social and I have a new pub out in AERA Open. We analyzed 400 abstracts of community colleges who received grants under the Title V Developing HSI program. This manuscript was so much fun to work on, and SAS is a dream thought partner. #HSIs #HigherEd #AcademicBluesky

Dropping tomorrow! Community colleges do the heavy lifting in providing access to postsecondary education for many minoritized and historically excluded groups. Yet these institutions are often left out of conversations of how national and state efforts to eliminate DEI programs and services.

This conversation left me thinking of the community college students I taught who were dealing with profound challenges while pursuing their associate’s degrees. I loved hearing Mandy and Tony talk about this topic and thinking how I can better support my students. 🧡
📣 WE DROPPED A NEW EPISODE! 📣 Check out this amazing conversation with Dr. Amanda Latz and Mr. Anthony Williams as we talk about the incredibly important topic of students’ mental health. Link in bio for how to access on the platform of your choice!

🚨 NEW PUB ALERT 🚨

I believe in the power of grants to transform orgs & the field in powerful ways.

Yet, competitive grantmaking can also recreate harm, regardless of funders’ good intentions.

Cynthia Villarreal & I show this in our latest pub. Check it out. It’s open access👇🏽
