🚨 NEW PUB ALERT 🚨

I believe in the power of grants to transform orgs & the field in powerful ways.

Yet, competitive grantmaking can also recreate harm, regardless of funders’ good intentions.

Cynthia Villarreal & I show this in our latest pub. Check it out. It’s open access👇🏽

No one teaches us how to do p&t letters so these resources are extra valuable!
Since it's Tenure-And-Promotion-To-Associate letter writing season, a few years ago I compiled a set of materials that I found useful in crafting my letters. They might be useful to you too, perhaps.

☑️ DONE

I am glad to still be stretching myself in new, even if uncomfortable, ways & leveraging my expertise—hopefully—for positive public impact.
🧵 Tomorrow, several researchers supported by our SSN policy staff will speak at the Dept. of Education’s public hearing on higher ed regulations. We’re proud to have helped them prepare their statements and bring research into the conversation.

The IPEDs data are notoriously unpleasant to download. Urban Institute put together a portal to help.

But, 2023 data aren't available through Urban yet. And, use the API at your own risk.

educationdata.urban.org/documentation/
The Urban Institute’s Education Data Portal offers users the ability to view data endpoints and select summary endpoints directly in their web browser. Users can access this application programming interface (API) by directly hitting a URL endpoint or by using Stata or R. All data are returned in JSON format and can be viewed directly in a web browser.

Funders incentivize X & Y; their generosity comes w/ expectations. What does this mean for cash-starved schools like many #HSIs?

edoran.bsky.social & I hit on this in👇🏽 pub, concluding, among pts, that govt priorities incentivize irrationality—i.e., “HSIs may rationally pitch irrational projects.”

I happily spent the day reading & writing a way too long lit review. Tonight, I revisited the paper, including my RQs, realizing several of the pages I’d labored over today are somewhat out of scope.

I almost got frustrated but instead reframed: I gifted myself a day of spring break reading.

New report: Too many communities lack broad-access colleges
A new report found that millions of Americans don’t have any colleges with high acceptance rates nearby, or they have only one, causing geographic disparities in college access.
