Doing this now for Eddington. I had similar issues - the (superior) auteur stylistics put me at a remove, it’s hard to gain purchase,so there’s satirical bite but it’s never actually funny.
That said - this is so rich, provocative, necessary.

Now I need to catch up on After the Hunt discourse. Parts - the opening party - were so cringe. Both austere and overwrought, I could have done without the “serious filmmaking” trappings and gone with a purely middlebrow take. But it is remarkable how Julia Roberts just gets better and better.
