As the @51st.news's first full-time reporter, I don't actually disagree with this. We're building something new one brick at a time, but at this point it's simply not a one-for-one replacement for what's being lost at the Post. (Please read and support us, though!)
People keep saying that this is The 51st, but with respect, I don't think it is. The 51st has (admirably) positioned itself as an outlet to give voice to underserved communities. But the city needs, like, a sports page, an arts page
Spitballing/bargaining stage of grief: A “Washington Banner” outlet, spun off the successful Baltimore Banner and taking advantage of its backend, built out of laid off Washington Post Metro and Sports staffers and funded via a mixed nonprofit and subscription model…

If you write primarily about nature and environmental issues, it can be hard to see the value of your work during times like these. I wrote about this a bit in my introduction to @biographic.bsky.social's weekly newsletter.

This is irresponsible reporting from @denverpost.com there is definitely avalanche terrain at Vail Pass, Mayflower Gulch, and probably Boreas and Buffalo Passes.

Minor thing, but for the last 8 years I had to spend this week working in the basement conference center of a hotel in DC, and I am so, so glad I’ll never have to be in the basement of the Fairmont DC ever again. Thank goodness for a new job.

When a winter storm takes out a power line that feeds someone's home, the only way their heat stays on is if they have a battery. This is true whether they heat with gas or an electric heat pump. Gas furnaces and boilers need power for their controls, fans and pumps. No battery, no heat.

I saw someone complain about this because it's not 'like for like' - ie, it should be a ship of solar panels vs a ship of gas turbines.

But if we're doing that, what about photons vs gas? Who can calculate the energy in one tanker full of photons and how many tankers of gas would be equivalent
IEA estimate of solar offsetting shiploads of coal based on 2023 data

Since then, tech improves, and in 2026, effectiveness of clean energy shiploads is up by up to 15%

But, efficiency of a ship full of coal or gas remains static

As far as I can tell, @billmckibben.bsky.social is the only writer with any real reach who is discussing the liberatory potential of distributed solar power. I'd like that subject to get a lot more air time.

It definitely feels like a time where it's okay to pick your niche, your expert area and the thing you're good at, and just focus your energy on that without trying to stretch yourself too thin (noting that there are many ppl who *have* to do that due to shitty circumstances)

It's never a bad time to reshare this @ayanaeliza.bsky.social framework
I think you need to do as much complexity as you can handle, but understand it's OK to revert to stuff you can manage. Complex solutions to complex problems are hard to convey, but provided you take others with you they'll get it, and we're all better off.

Thank you to the 147 House Democrats who voted against raising energy bills on American families this morning. To the 206 Republicans and 57 Democrats who voted for higher costs for families buying manufactured homes - why? Voters have clearly said they want lower bills, and this is an easy one.
“This gives the green light for manufacturers to pinch pennies on insulation and leave residents to pay the price month after month," said Jennifer Layke, Executive Director of ACEEE, about a bill just passed by the U.S. House of Representatives.
House Vote for Poorly-Insulated Manufactured Homes Would Raise Costs
The bill passed today would cancel energy efficiency standards and raise utility bills and total costs for residents

I think "Don't mention climate; focus on affordability" was naively assumed to be a safe centre-right climate position. But in the real world fossil fuel extraction and use are cripplingly expensive. 'Focus on affordability' = oppose fossil fuels.

Here’s my take. At this point, it’s good the U.S. is out. We were a barrier to progress anyway and now we can’t spike progress from inside.
