The federal government is taking over the California National Guard and deploying 2,000 soldiers in Los Angeles — not because there is a shortage of law enforcement, but because they want a spectacle.

Don't give them one.

Never use violence. Speak out peacefully.

I am proudly a long yime amazon boycotter. Buy from local and small businesses before choosing big box stores too.
Not buying Amazon kindle books anymore. They weren't really bought anyway, they were "rented". Using my library and epub options instead. Also stopped my Prime subscription. We're all going to suffer, no matter what, so make it on your terms, not theirs.

If you care about science & higher ed in America right now, your world has changed.

We have been forced into a battle we didn’t choose.

Whatever our titles, our jobs now also includes emergency response, psychological first aid, organizing & many other things we weren’t trained in

I forgot how fun it can be to do surprise phone calls as an early method of reaching out to prospective advisors and nicely grilling them on their and their dept's #DEI efforts.

I cant land in a situation like the one i just left. #PhDMomentum hopefully continuing in fall. #AcademicSky #PhDChat

Personal mantra of the week (or month):
"Be bold or go home!"

Stand up for whats right and speak out or go home and be a bystander.

I knew there was a reason to never state my academic affiliations openly. As a marginalized scientist you never know when your prejudice employer will backstab you with discrimination.

All I want is an advisor of a lab where the people know how to treat each other with decency and respect regardless of the diversity of differences we may have among us.

I need a new phd program and an advisor who understands this.

I cant think about what my advisor did to me due to his biases without having severe tremors, flashbacks, and migraines. The tremors get so severe I can't even type.

I need an advisor that knows how to respect underrepresented scientists instead of berating them everyday.

Its that time of year again....... to start thinking about how great it would be to be a seasonal migrator to the other hemisphere for about 6 months until the cold seasons pass.

Base layers. Base layers base layers base layers.

If you can swing a wool mesh base layer, do that, but any kind of clothing/insulation that makes an air barrier between you and your clothes.

I'm cold-loving, but I'm often *too warm* wearing a wool base layer in -5f Colorado winters.

Couple gets onto an elevator going up saying theyre going down bc all the ones going down are crowded.
You know you're a biologist when replying to complete strangers w/ "so youre marking your terrirtory on the elevator before others get to it"
realizing the word choice. 😆

Driving vs flying: Carbon footprint, driving has less emissions than flying.

Driving vs flying: Driving is safer travel for the immunocompromised.
Covid-19 is alive & kicking & mutating.

Driving vs flying: Driving is easier to get around go hiking, go to Dave and Busters😏

Driving wins!!

Wrote a email detailing what i thought was pertinent. Then i ran it through my mantra:
"Less is more."
Then i when back and included the bare minimum for the main purpose.

Succinct email sent!
Less is more, works everytime!

I somehow managed to turn my 8page CV into the required 3page max CV.
It was surprisingly much easier this timw than it was previously.

I was pleasantly surprised.
