To my followers: I don’t know half of you half as well as I should like; and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.
The "follow" dichotomy I always struggle with is "I want to see every single thing you post" vs. "I want you to know that I like and respect you." My Following feed is so overstuffed as it is, but I hate the idea that people I don't follow back might think that I don't appreciate them!
The "follow" button confounds "I'm looking at your content" and "I endorse this content." We need two different ways to signal the difference between the two.

Language can be a decisive, qualitative leap forward for the development of distinctly human, discursive intelligence without being a “foundation” for all forms of intelligence.
Language is a really, really recent thing that humans, uniquely among creatures on this planet, produce and use

It absolutely cannot be the foundation of intelligence, because sapients have had cognition and consciousness and all that much longer than we’ve had language

We’re watching every major institution and check on executive power fall like a house of cards, and no one knows how to do anything about it.

Kracauer’s From Caligari to Hitler hits harder every year I teach it.

What I'm saying is: I wish the people who thunder about the classics so much had actually read them and taken them seriously. (The tell is if they use the word "Western Civilization" with deep seriousness.)

It is shocking how much this minority has managed to alter our collective memory about the pandemic.
Most people got shots and then were chill about things with minimal subsequent thought.

But a small number of people just lost their minds, and won't stop talking about it. Pretty typical dynamic where a loud and unhinged minority skews perspective of perceived population averages

Apparently you can become the director of the CDC with only a degree in the humanities. Clearly we aren't capitalizing enough on our amazing versatility and relevance to increase our department budgets a hundredfold.

Phones are poison in a classroom and should be banned from that space. I’m slamming my gavel here.

I shouldn’t be but I’m a little shocked by the comment section here. Once again, the attitude towards adjuncts is: We desperately need you but also we hate your guts for taking this position and accepting low wages.

This is insane, but I suspect it is coming for us all.
The “deal” that Brown made with the Trump admin is much more extreme than is being reported. It includes government oversight of course evaluations and no barrier to government interference in faculty hiring.

I hope I’m wrong, but I’m pretty confident that no matter what the right is going to stick with Trump and this will all blow over in a year.

the folks dooming about Maxwell’s testimony don’t get that “if it doesn’t talk about Trump it’s faked” has found some traction *on the right*, this isn’t some magic wand

I’ve had multiple conversations with older folks this summer - elder millennials, boomers, gen x - who casually mentioned that they can no longer read books and rely on YouTube summaries and audiobooks. A few even got agitated at the suggestion that they should keep trying. We are cooked.

I don’t usually do this kind of thing, but my friend is fighting an insane battle with AirBNB owners who have taken over his HOA and deserves whatever support people can give. The video barely scratches the surface of what he’s been dealing with for years. Chip in if you can. It’s a worthy cause.

Absolutely crucial point here. “Exploitation” is the genus and not a mere synonym of surplus value “extraction”
'exploitation' of nature, science, one country against another etc but that's not especially notable. Lots of words have multiples uses. What occurred to me tonight tho is that Marx does not use term exploitation to refer exclusively to the capitalist class extracting surplus labor. Rather he uses

Everyone laughs at psychoanalysis for blaming everything on parents and family, but believe me when I say that modern psychiatry is much more effective at blaming and shaming the family of those experiencing a crisis than psychoanalysis ever was.

I suspect my dad is in the early stages of another mental health episode, so expect more posts from me about Lacanian theories of psychosis as I feel more and more powerless to do anything about it.

Can someone explain to me why this isn’t being treated as a major crisis by every major outlet?
Judge Hannah Dugan, the Wisconsin judge who was arrested on Friday morning on charges of obstructing immigration enforcement, spent most of her legal career working on behalf of low-income people and marginalized groups. Here's what to know.

You can listen to me ramble about slow cinema with my bud @matthiasellis.com, if you’re into that sort of thing.
This one I'm really excited about: we were joined by film theorist @ebdim9.bsky.social to discuss Zhangke's STILL LIFE (2006). We discuss slow(ish) cinema, the paradoxes of digital realism, China's neoliberal turn, historical memory, and fight over frame rates podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/d...

I once had a student complain to me about another adjunct prof who didn’t know how to use Blackboard very well. He said that if he were making six figures to teach two courses a semester, he would learn the technology for the job. He refused to believe that we were paid so little.
I'm convinced that at least some of the cultural resentment at academia is rooted on the completely mistaken belief that we all are have permanent job security, make six figure salaries to teach 4 hours a week with summers off, and get to spend all our time Thinking, capital-t.
I told my sister-in-law my salary last night & she was totally shocked. she was like, “I was sure you were in the six-figures.” she works in medical administration & makes 20K more than me a year

just so everyone knows—assistant professors in English lit DO NOT make six figures.
