We all want to build communities where #publicsafety is the defining feature. So, why do we still allow for law enforcement as wealth extraction? Or the entrenched perversion of revenue over #justice?

And what are the solutions we should be pushing toward?

Let's talk about it.

The #CivilWar wasn't about states' rights just like #ICE using authoritarian tactics isn't about immigration. Different century, same playbook - terrify, terrorize, seek submission from people who refused to be "other'ed" into obscurity. Wanna debate policy? Cool. Wanna support this? Not as much.

For those reentering society, freedom comes with strings attached.

Nearly every state allows jails & prisons to bill people for their own incarceration. From room & board to medical costs, these #PayToStay fees tether people to the system they’ve already paid their debt to.

"You've taken people at their most vulnerable and handed them a bill they can't pay. That debt destabilizes lives & entire communities."

Charging fees to incarcerated people isn't just egregiously bad fiscal practice. It's financial exploitation that exacerbates harm.
