Screenshot of a post from Meteorologist Noah Bergren (1 of 2) LORD... this thing refuses to stop intensifying. I mean, meteorologically WOW. Hurricane Melissa now has 175 MPH sustained winds with wind gusts to 215 MPH. It probably will strengthen more overnight. There will be a path near the center of tornado like damage and near total destruction of everything in its path in the eyewall. Complete structure failure is possible with extreme roof damage along the path. Towns and communities in the western side of the island may be wiped out or left cutoff to outside access for extended time. The meteorological limit of max realistic intensity is nearing. There is a parameter for it, MPI (max potential intensity) - which is merely a meteorological formula to give a rough estimate of the strongest storm the Earth's atmosphere can produce at a given time. That number currently is around 184 MPH sustained winds. What is also remarkable, and not drama or a stretch of the truth... is the fact this hurricane has yet to start doing ERC (eyewall replacement cycles) -- this is very rare how long it is maintaining its initial eye without doing a replacement cycle yet. What we're witnessing with #Melissa is ultra rare in the history of known hurricanes in the Atlantic. This level of sustained intensity and feasting on every joule of ocean heat content without any real disruption is incredible.

Not hyperbole: Jamaica is facing a generational catastrophic event.

There's a hurricane hunter flight ongoing inside #Melissa, and it's not showing signs of weakening. One of the dropsonde measurements within the eye was 902mb, and the most recent dropsonde in the eye was 903mb, same as the 11pm advisory

If there’s any ‘good’ news with a Cat5 landfall its those intense winds are confined to a smaller area.

As of 8pEDT/7pEST Monday 27-Oct2025 Hurricane force winds (74 to 175mph (120 to 280km/h)) extend out 30miles(45km) from center. (These numbers do fluctuate over time).
