The Kodansha Super Mario manga actually did go "Cranky is the original Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr. is his son, Country / Modern Donkey Kong is his grandson", which I wasn't expecting from a Japanese piece of Mario media, but it treated Lady and Pauline as two different characters
