My essay in The Sun Magazine is a love letter to bereaved parents, my friends, and a dog named Shitter. I hope you will read!
Staying Tender
Listening to parents who are newly grieving, I notice the places where their voices break. It is not when they describe the concrete details of suffering and lifeless bodies; it is in the emptiness th...

I would knock a million doors, fundraise, cartwheel down the middle of my street for a candidate who promised to tax the rich and fully fund schools. I am not even sure I can muster energy to fill in the bubble on my ballot for whatever this is.

A wrenching story about gun and traffic violence. Buried in this story is the fact that the 11yo's father had also been killed in a crash five years earlier. What a sweet kid. What senseless loss. Appreciate the depth of reporting by @noellecrombie.bsky.social 💔
He tried to save himself. He killed an 11-year-old instead
An explosive collision in the summer of 2023 came amid a historic surge in both fatal traffic crashes and shootings.

From my own niche: institutions of higher education should stop chasing trends, work internally to assert a set of values, and then build curriculum around those values.

This story is so upsetting. I wonder if Portland law enforcement would be open to talking with crash victims/surviving family members about driver accountability.
Despite the driver's admission of guilt, a solid witness statement, and irrefutable video evidence, PPB Officer Alexandru Martiniuc declined to issue any citation at all. The reason: The driver felt bad and said sorry.

My one-and-only mother was hit & killed by a car on Wednesday. I am all the adjectives you can imagine: shattered, devastated, bereft.

And no hour has passed in the last 48 where I have not felt unbelievably lucky, overwhelmed with gratitude for all the time I got to be her daughter.

For the loved ones of someone killed in a traffic crash, every day is a day of remembrance. But many others need a reminder of the devastating human toll traffic violence takes each day. On Sunday, Portlanders gathered to honor the lives lost and demand action to prevent more needless deaths.

Portland, please stand with crash victims and their families, have some hot chocolate, and hear about what we're doing to prevent others from experiencing the devastating impacts of traffic violence. It's a somber, powerful event that also manages to be hopeful. Hope to see you there 💛

This is an absolutely blistering piece about the tragedy experienced by one family who lost a brother and son to traffic violence, and the systems that make these crashes keep happening.
"On paper, policymakers make lofty commitments to public transportation and road safety, placing the utmost value on human life. In practice, human life is not as important as the convenience of drivers — a policy choice that endangers every person in California."

Lots of talk about primarying congressional members. Meanwhile when I talk about wanting to primary incumbent state legislators people act like it shouldn’t even be allowed…how are you supposed to hold elected officials accountable in safe Dem seats if you don’t primary them???

My son Seamus died 15 years ago today. He was killed by a careless driver in a crosswalk.

He walked at 9 months, almost as if he knew he wouldn’t have much time. His favorite thing to do was throw rocks into water. He loved the moon. He called butterflies “buddy buddies.” I miss him every day.

I've attended a few of these (excited to send my kids to Jefferson!) and am so shocked how often parents who want to send their kids to Grant bring up real estate and property values. I mean I knew they were thinking it, but to just come out and say it??? 🫣 🤢
