An art hero. Something like this can only happen out of pure artistic intent: she inadvertently created a work perfectly symbolic of the love and joy we should all feel in practicing art. Yes it’s hilarious, yes it’s destructive, but yes it’s insanely beautiful.

If you haven’t seen this, it’s almost guaranteed to become a holiday classic for the family. Absolutely fantastic little movie.
30 minutes in to Klaus and really enjoying it. How did I not hear about this film til now, yet it came out back in 2019!

Marty Supreme is great; would not be surprised at all if this became the Millennial version of The Graduate.

Hate for Alien 3, which by any other standard is a perfectly good B movie, seems mainly a reflection of the (utterly earned) love of Aliens. But as the stylistic leap from Alien to Aliens is so vast, I’ve never seen these films as living in the same world, and so 3 is just another variation for me.

Moby Dick reads like a new novel simulating diving into a YouTube rabbit-hole. Every ranting, distracted, detail-obsessed chapter is another click on a late-night ride of passionate opinions, heartfelt humanism, irony, and dirty jokes, all covertly searching for authenticity and meaning. #booksky

Sequels not as good as the originals, but instead are weird masterpieces of their own:

No chance you’ll agree:
Exorcist II

Probably a nope:
Alien 3

With an explanation:
Psycho 2
Predator 2

Almost no preface:
2010
Babe Pig in the City
Furiosa
Return to Oz

Uncontested:
Exorcist III

The best one yet; incredibly fun, weirdly powerful.
“All I have is my faith.”

I’m not the first person to note this, but “Fire and Ash” work appreciably better for me on second viewing.

A science-fiction biblical epic, a story about what it means to live believing that God has turned Her face away from you.

Kubrick’s right: the kid thinks he’s Pinnochio, seeing himself as the poor, misunderstood, good guy - when he is really the Creature from Frankenstein, a story that many today ALSO project themselves into as the poor, misunderstood good guy. But the boy - and the Creature - are in fact the monster.

I really like John Huston’s Moby Dick, but even that one leaves out the novel’s essential element, which is that it’s batshit insane

Loved Avatar; it might be the first time that I thought HFR looked good. Brilliant imagery, insane set pieces, and a wonderful villain. Cameron is still the all-time master of these kinds of thrills, but it really struck me this time what a strange, grand experiment these movies really are.

besides brilliant, gorgeous, frightening, spiritual, and profound, it's notable that Moby Dick is also, in the best way, just plain filthy
