“Individuals on the ground sent a message that reached us Monday morning that 1,200 were dead,” Nathaniel Raymond, the lab’s executive director, said. “By that evening, they said 10,000. By Tuesday, we couldn’t reach them anymore. We assume our ground contacts are dead.”

My new article in Third World Quarterly is out!
“El estado es un macho violador: Reconsidering the state as a site for peacebuilding.”
It argues that the state reproduces patriarchal & colonial violence — and that peacebuilding must center feminist, decolonial practices of care & resistance.

Just out in Perspectives on Politics! 🎉

My co-authored article: “International Relations Scholars, the Media, and the Dilemma of Consensus.”

We dig into how IR scholars navigate media engagement and balance consensus with debate—especially urgent in an era of growing backlash against experts.

COP30 assumes states control their territories—but in Latin America, the reality is far more complex. Extractive industries, armed groups, and political elites often hold more power than national governments.

The situation now in Tibú, Colombia: sources inside tell me that the army is bombarding ELN and FARC dissident guerrilla forces, who are pinned down. Residents in the urban sector have been told to shelter in place and fear clashes will reach them.

Musk/DOGE cuts are (1) wildly unpopular, (2) plainly illegal, and (3) utterly incompetent, and yet the DC political establishment is unwilling or unable to stop it. They are bowing to a regime of government by billionaire fiat.
DOGE's "receipts" continue to be complete nonsense. And now deliberately so, given that they were told this was false and they removed it, only to repost it.

🧵 Here's what @stephrschwartz.bsky.social and I have been fretting about:

Crackdowns on immigrants, mass deportation, and internment camps (and the suffering they cause) are recurrent in US history. But this time, it's also one of the Trump admin's power grabs. 1/

A wonderful breakdown of why trying nationalize the regionalism of Colombia, even for the sake of a particular political party is so complex/ a bad idea!
With JP Milanese, we wrote this analysis about the recent subnational elections in Colombia. Subnational politics in Colombia is not a reflection of national politics! This has to be a part of our analysis of the results! latinoamerica21.com/en/petro-and...
