Why I engage in “open science”? Transparency for myself and promotion of collective knowledge production. Here’s one example…

Fun to listen to @edyong209.bsky.social talk about discovering joy, cultivating a sense of wonder and stillness, building community, and instilling hope despite challenges—thru birding.

What do others do for these things? Mine had been kickboxing, rockclimbing, and recently pottery.

We wanted to share some insights from what we’ve learned so far through our participants’ experiences.
These experiences help us recognize important patterns and identify resources that support well-being.

Representation in research matters and this is just the beginning of what we’re uncovering.

Participants from the Black community show up for research that they find personally and culturally relevant. An infographic on our ongoing data collection!
Too often, people from marginalized communities are called “hard to reach.”

But our findings from the Black Adult Resilience Study show something different — when research is rooted in community and trust, people want to be part of it.

Here are some findings from our participants.

We use evidence to discuss public health issues. When it comes to data-informed recommendations, credentials and expertise matter. Completing education and appropriate practical training bolsters our expertise as scientists and health professionals. Influencer =/= scientific communication.

Kudos and congrats to, Christine Chang, my 2nd year PhD student for being selected to receive a 2025 APAGS/Psi Chi Junior Scientist Fellowship. This award recognizes outstanding research-oriented students early in their doctoral training, and provides support for direct research costs.

We made an infographic summarizing some emerging patterns using SeaTac geospatial data and exploring participants’ lived experiences in our neighborhoods. Our project coordinator hates the photo bc my phone is old (so I cropped her), but this is us presenting these data at a conference this summer.

We are doing a free and public facing event that includes sharing some of our emerging observations from BARS-SeaTac and roundtable discussions (with the audience!). If you are in the area, come join is next Wednesday at 5pm.
Join us for a conversation on cannabis use among Black young adults.
We’ll discuss the different factors that influence cannabis use and share insights from data we’ve collected so far.

Research is… refining study protocol and materials, and documenting everything. The documents can help our future selves to remember what we were thinking and enhance transparency and others’ verification of our procedures and findings. #NewResearch #OpenScience
Research is self correcting. We do this by disclosing real & “perceived” conflicts of interest and positionality if scientist authors, peer reviewers, journal editors, and other working partners—and recuse when appropriate, so that independent readers can evaluate the credibility of the research.

Announcing such a major change to NSF GRFP this late in the cycle is incredibly cruel. 2nd yr students (mine included) have been working so hard on their proposals despite ongoing uncertainty. They are driven and passionate about being outstanding scientists and helping those coming up behind them.

"Preregistration" lumps three distinct practices into one:

- Study registration
- Protocol
- Analysis plans (SAPs)

To advance open science, it's critical that we distinguish them.
