Mathematician Sofya Kovalevskaya was the first woman to:

+ Earn a doctorate in #mathematics (in the modern sense)
+ Be appointed to a full professorship in mathematics

She was also one of the first women to work for a scientific journal as an editor. She died #OTD in 1891.

In the 1940s, it was perhaps possible for citizens to argue that they didn’t know what was really going on in detention facilities. In the 2020s, that argument no longer holds. It’s obvious to all.

Human dignity should be inviolable.

In a new low for payments to external academics, a university within the EU just offered me 255 euros for a year’s work supervising a PhD student. For context, the usual workload allocation is around 6 working days a year for this, so that’s 50% of the minimum wage for an unskilled 21 year old. 😮
