How well do wildlife crossing structures help animals across roads? — Transport Ecology
Wildlife crossing structures seem like a simple and attractive solution to help animals across roads. But how well do they actually work? This latest global research summary tried to find out.

Just witnessed a local pest control company spray the outside of entire doublestorey house and garden - in 30km/h winds. Does anybody know a) what they typically use, and b) how on *earth* that's allowed?! They even blasted the shrubs in the garden and nature strip. ping @lizzylowe.bsky.social

Yes & no. There's @dianafisher1080.bsky.social's 2001 life-history database doi.org/10.1890/0012..., and we also developed parameter estimates for various marsupials (extinct & extant) here: doi.org/10.7554/eLif... (have a look at Appendix 2 in particular). But 'plug-in' values not straightforward
THE ECOLOGICAL BASIS OF LIFE HISTORY VARIATION IN MARSUPIALS
Our understanding of the diversity of mammalian life histories is based almost exclusively on eutherian mammals, in which the slow–fast continuum persists even after controlling for effects of body s...

Hi #ausmammal crew. Do we have any kind of database of known survival rates or other demographic details for Australian mammals? e.g. the kind that could be plugged into a PVA? Trawling the literature isn't yielding much at the moment @euanritchie.bsky.social

I was so impressed with the recent slow down in email traffic - until I realised that it was not, in fact, a change of work culture but rather that Gmail stopped retrieving 80% of my email from outlook 🤦🏻‍♀️ Sorry if you’ve emailed me recently! I didn’t see it. I * did* have a nice week though.

Non-traditional hours but that doesn't mean I expect others to do the same.

I find I don't say 'no' a lot. Rather I say 'I AM SO EXCITED BY THIS IDEA! These are the days I can work on this with you.'

The biggest problem I have is cross-over between roles. The boundary setting is harder, but..

I say "no." by saying "no" when needed I *become* a timelord.

I don't set out of office messages. that's for people who are expected to be available all the time. anyone who expects this is bonkers.

(as an old white dude I benefit from a lot of privilege when I do this...)

Some great tips coming through for managing expectations while working part-time
Like you Kylie I need to do better at it but this helped in 2024:
•out of office auto-reply on non work days
•communicate work pattern to committee organisers/stakeholders so they know when I’m available
•say no to things that aren’t essential or don’t add value
•not opening emails on non work days

Hey fellow part-time academics! What are your tips on managing workloads and expectations on your time? Hoping to get better at this in 2025. Do you set out of office replies on non work days? Do you just say no a lot? or are you some kind of timelord? #academicmama #academicchatter

Sorry #ESAus2024, I’ve made a sneaky exit. I’ve got to get home to be yelled at by some tiny humans, er, I mean, parenting responsibilities. Thanks so much for having me. You’ve been swell. Get in touch!
