The problem with most machine-based random number generators is that they’re not TRULY random, so if you need genuine randomness it is sometimes necessary to link your code to an external random process like a physical noise source or the current rate of US tariffs on a given country.

This is an example of how the “don’t comply in advance” idea falls apart.
I received a heartbreaking email today: A paper in a special issue I’m editing is being retracted because one of its authors is afraid of losing their job and their legal status in the U.S. if they publish a scientific study on evolution. Yes, on evolution, nature's engine of diversity.

Better download any NIST spectra you might need. Who knows if they will stay online after the atomic spectroscopy group gets shut down.

Well I just found out that my university is halting all new PhD applications. I’m glad we’re not rescinding any like UMass Medical but still…

Me to my eldest child: “I’ve obtained a microwave for recreational purposes.”
Them: “as one does”

It’s nice to have someone who understands me on that level.

Is this just a really weird psyop to get conservatives to go green?

The tech industry leadership seems to have concluded that AI will soon reach "PhD level". I wonder how much of them are thinking that they will soon be able to keep getting their cool shit without having the nerdy (science) baggage that come with it.

This is one of the most moving videos on YouTube that I have watched. Mad respect for @xylafoxlin.bsky.social for sharing something so personal and yet so very much important for the flying public and the pilots that are forced to suffer in silence.
