The Bonkbuster
What were women reading in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s? This book presents a major study of the “bonkbuster,” an incredibly popular genre of women's fiction in t…

can’t overstate how badly young people have been fucked over by the “digital natives” label. they just don’t get any basic computer skills classes at all, it’s assumed knowledge. the situation is akin to if we abolished English as a subject for the new gen of “native English speakers”

N.B. As CarrieLynn notes later in the thread, this is not a drag on students - it's a list of gaps in learning and skills that need to be addressed - and reliance on AI widens these gaps even further.
If I hear one more person refer to Gen Z or Gen Alpha as digital natives when the students do not know:

1. How to use built-in Word functions like outlining and spellchecker
2. The different types of basic files
3. Interoperability
4. The issues related to uploading

Very sad news. I remember meeting Chris at a morning tea at the OG Australian Centre on Barry Street when I first started my PhD there. He gave me 2 books of his poems, which I still have. Always such a kind figure at the Centre - so humble and unassuming, even with a library named after him! Vale.
Sad to learn that Chris Wallace-Crabbe has joined the majority; here he is with kindergarten friend Ian Donaldson (he still had a bday card from Ian from then; they shared a bday, Chris older by a year). A great loss.

Vale notice from @humanitiesau.bsky.social:

I don't agree with his reasoning, but Calibri does suck and should be removed from society.
Marco Rubio ordered diplomats to return to using Times New Roman font in official communications, calling his predecessor's decision to adopt Calibri a “wasteful” diversity move

It's destroying any joy there was in marking assignments.

It creates distrust between educator and student (both directions) because some are using it to write assignments or mark essays, so you need to be vigilant with ALL.

Most importantly, it's reducing critical thinking and writing skills!

And there it is. EIC Versha Sharma is "leaving the company" - sounds like a polite euphemism. She has been a driving force in making Teen Vogue the excellent outlet for political commentary that it has been in recent years. I hope she and those excellent journos continue this work elsewhere.
They just gutted Teen Vogue which had top notch political journalism. The media is continuing to purge any sort of political dissent to Trump and the oligarchs.
