The 'kin' of ‘napkin’ means "little."

‘Nap’ comes from ‘nape,' which means “tablecloth.”

So a napkin is a little tablecloth.

10/10, no notes.

Unsolicited writing advice, no. 867:
Don't make your writing all about you. Leave some space for your readers to also make it about themselves.

Unsolicited writing advice, no.345:
Vary the lengths of your sentences. Short ones have impact. Longer ones add depth and character. Ideally you should use a variety of sentence lengths to keep your reader engaged.

Unsolicited writing advice, no. 111:
There’s no limit as to how much description you include in a book. Some books are spare, others lavish. But however much you include, every sentence should pay its way in atmosphere, plot, effect on the characters, etc. Nothing should be just word count.

You know, Jane Austen clearly found most people really annoying, which is why her books all ended with her annoyedly telling us “look some of these people got married, some died, some were miserable, some were happy, but most importantly THE END.”

Unsolicited writing advice: no. 8075: There is no such thing as serious writing. There are only writers who take their work seriously, and those who don’t. Tragedy is no more “serious” than comedy. Children’s writing is no less “serious” than writing for adults. Good writing is wherever you find it.

Unsolicited writing advice, no. 154:
Feed your writing daily. Feed it with fiction, non-fiction, news, games, theatre, films, art. Feed it with conversation. Feed it with experience. Feed it with curiosity. Don't expect to get anything out unless you also keep putting in.

After a truly hectic few weeks (six, so far), through careful planning, I’ve contrived today to involve the kind of day where it’s all easy admin. The type that can be achieved on the phone in bed (a.m) or sitting on a sofa in front of the fire, after a dog walk (p.m). Ecstatic, to be honest! 🤷🏻‍♀️📚☺️

Unsolicited writing advice, no. 443: Imagery can be wonderfully evocative, but always give it space to breathe. The page is a gallery; give the space to one really worthwhile picture; don't clutter it with lots of frames that will distract your readers...
