NEW PREPRINT 💡
Together with @dougaparry.bsky.social, I just published a new preprint experimentally examining how specific normative cues on social media shape self-disclosure using an innovative simulation approach.

It feels like at this time of year my work consists primarily of cutting text down to meet page, word, or other space limits set by various journals and conferences.

I didn’t think it would, but it is actually quite a disenfranchising feeling living for the first time in a country where you cannot vote.. so if you can, get out and vote!

Any experiences with data donation of #Spotify listening history?
I requested to download my full listening history and it said that it would take 30 days to produce the download.
2 hours later I received the link to the zip file with full JSON records.
Any other experiences with this?

I've used many ESM/mobile sensing apps/tools but it's been a while since I've launched a new study of this kind.
Does anyone know of an uptodate table/taxonomy/document/resource/github page summarising the relative features/options/pros/cons/pricing of the various options?

Open Terms Archive[1] is a pretty cool service: They track, scrape, and store all versions of online platforms' ToS and privacy policies and make them publicly available. Might be pretty interesting to use e.g. in longitudinal studies to track platform changes.

It's telling that @hankgreen.bsky.social's Pomodoro timer/version of the "Forest: Stay Focused" app is currently the #1 downloaded app on iOS #digitalselfcontrol
It's genuinely absurd that Hank has co-created the most popular app in the United States. This is only going to encourage him.

It's great to finally have something to share from this collaboration. We started working on this idea in late 2022...
We argue that research on MMT and attentional control has neglected intra-individual variation in control. This holds significant implications for theory and research design.

New in JCMC with @bronwynec.bsky.social: People who feel more in control of their social media use tend to use it less and report better well-being. Seeing social media as positive was associated with more use, but not well-being. 👉 doi.org/10.1093/jcmc...

This was also a theme in many @icamobile.bsky.social panels... working with existing datasets to run secondary analyses to answer new questions.
@jbgruber.bsky.social & @vanatteveldt.com argue that as data become more difficult to collect (no APIs, scraping more difficult) we need to share existing data more. And how non-consumptive research is a way to do that without goi g to jail! #ica25

Papers are one-way conversations. Getting additional info from authors can be hard, so clear reporting from the outset is critical.
