Do I have any friends here on BlueSky planning to be at #Yallfest this weekend?

I'm planning to be there. And looking forward to hanging out with Kendra@readappalachia.bsky.social over the weekend.

Especially excited for @hannsawyerr.bsky.social and @ambsmcbride.bsky.social sessions. Love #NIV!

I'm feeling kind of pleased with myself. I was sitting in car line trying to compose a poem, and without looking it up, I managed 3 stanzas of Rime Royale! Double checked that I had the form right when I got home. And it was! The form is starting to stick!

This is one of my podcast favorites. Both because @kdwinchester.bsky.social is a good friend and because I love how she promotes Appalachian stories and poetry. And this episode with @noahsoltau.bsky.social of @redbranchreview.bsky.social was especially enjoyable!

Well this sounds lovely!
A book that comes to mind for me is @baronchrisbaron.bsky.social's Spark! The way the kids work together to protect the forest, and the replanting after the fire both have so much resilience and hope.

Kole’s book is SO good! I really recommend it for every PB writer. #KidLitChat

#KidLitChat I will say, Mary Kole's Writing Irresistible Picture Books has some excellent insight on PB trends. She posits that PB's have gone from 1.0 to 2.0 and now we're in an new phase post 2.0. Super fascinating.
People now say over 500 words is too much for a picture book (unless nf or bio). At the same time, I note more prominent pb writers can get longer books through. And I sold a picture book over 800 words in 2025. But it was a very odd book. Hence my theory: now's the time to go weird! #kidlitchat

I don't think you should write to trends--but knowing what the current trends are helps you focus your pitch. What we create can be packaged so many different ways. #kidlitchat

Picture books usually come out 3 years after the contract is signed, so what's on shelves now doesn't reflect a current trend, so much as 2022. But I can say in terms of my own manuscripts, it's the more unusual ones editors have liked in 2024/2025. So maybe now's the time to go weird?! #kidlitchat

#KidLitChat The main form/genre I observe is MG verse novel. And I do notice trends sometimes. Like we just had something like 3 or 4 different MG NIV with forest fire related stories. Each one was distinct. And they could all be read without feeling like you were getting the same story.
TOPIC: We just had a time change and, as always, times are changing, too. Do you keep an eye on trends? How do they inform how you work? And what trends are you noticing in the kidbook biz these days? #kidlitchat

This was such a fascinating read. And felt heartbreakingly relevant to today. It’s based on the true story of a desegregation case in the 1930s in Lemon Grove. #MG #VerseNovel #KidLit

Two years ago.

Dad is alive. He lost a lot of memories in this. He has very little short term memory. And he says one eye is like the vision "shattered."

I feel both grief and gratitude. Grief over all that’s been lost. Gratitude for all we still share with him.
For all the scares of Halloween, nothing terrifies me as much as my dad flatlining this morning.

I've made it to the hospital with him though and he's doing ok tonight. Able to hold conversation andceceb joke.
