This is a map of northern Canadian localities my group has studied mayflies from - I've had the great fortune to visit most of these and collect them myself, though some are from a study of archived specimens from various studies.

Hello Insectphile Friends!

I’m giving a casual presentation to a “ladies lunch” group next week about insects. I can talk for days about insects, both scientifically & emotionally, but that’s just me.

Tell me & help me, what should I include about why YOU love insects?

Hugs & Bugs!

Decided to put my bias away for a bit and watch this. Well worth it, I encourage others to do the same. Former PM's from entirely different ends of the ideological spectrum, you won't find a better example of what makes us 🇨🇦. (& different than the crumbling empire to the south)

This paper addresses the fundamental challenge with wet collection specimen containers: their loss of stability over time.

Read about how the museum's collection was used to investigate this problem: doi.org/10.3897/nhcm.3.181881
Evidence-based assessment of container suitability for alcohol-preserved natural history specimens
Specimens preserved in alcohol require ongoing monitoring to prevent deterioration, as the preservative is inherently unstable and susceptible to evaporation and concentration changes. The Natural His...

this insect is hard to pin down, for what it is exactly, it has 11 abdominal segments, which is very strange for an insect, but we think it might be a larvae of stemm-Holometabola insect fro Permian. Another case of "who the hell knows what it is, but its cool" in palaeoentomology

I woke up feeling ready to scrap again.

I got some really good advice in grad school for dealing with setbacks and it still works: give yourself the rest of the day to mourn and really feel your feelings—be a caricature, wallow, use all your coping mechanisms. Go to bed, dust off, and move on.

(1) Ostriches are charismatic, but in this case they were still farm animals.

Culls suck, but large-scale animal farming is always going to feature culls, particularly when dangerous viruses are spreading. If you don't want culls, reduce or halt meat consumption. 🌎

Besides this, there's also...

Years ago, when a severe storm closed the road to the family cottage, I drove down a distant dirt road I'd never been on, ditched the car, and navigating several miles through a forest and wetland back to the cottage, without a phone, GPS or map. Yet I can't seem to cancel an online subscription.

#WorldWetlandsDay 🌿💧

To protect and restore these vital ecosystems, we need stronger wetland science education.

Understanding how wetlands function, from peatlands to marshes, is essential for training the next generation to safeguard biodiversity, water quality, and climate resilience.
