The Bible verse Acts 4:12 says, "Jesus is the only One who can save people. No one else in the world is able to save us". Sermon: “A Shadow of the Strong Delusion” Beloved, the apostle Paul warned in 2 Thessalonians 2 that those who reject the love of the truth will become vulnerable to deception. He speaks of a “strong delusion” that will one day sweep the world—a deception so powerful that many will embrace lies as though they were gospel truth. We look around our world today and see patterns that echo Paul’s warning. No, we cannot say this is the final delusion tied to the man of sin. But we can say honestly, boldly, and biblically: the MAGA delusion has the same spirit, the same symptoms, and the same spiritual sickness. When Christians elevate a politician to messianic status… When pastors declare Trump “God’s chosen one”… When false prophets claim dreams and visions that never come to pass… When believers defend sin, violence, cruelty, and corruption as if it were righteousness… When nationalism replaces the gospel… When the flag is preached louder than the cross… Church, that is not the Holy Spirit—it is deception. The strong delusion begins whenever people choose lies over truth, power over purity, and a political savior over Jesus Christ. MAGA is not simply a movement; for many, it has become an identity, a religion, a counterfeit kingdom demanding loyalty and worship. Paul warned that those who refuse the truth will be handed over to the lies they crave. And we are watching this unfold as Christians believe conspiracy theories more passionately than Scripture, trust political voices more than the voice of Christ, and excuse behavior they would condemn in any other leader. This sermon is not about Trump alone—it is about the church. A church that forgets its first love is a church ready for deception. The true Messiah has already come. He is not running for office. He does not need ballots, rallies, or prophets for hire. His kingdom is not of this world.

Sermon: “Laughing With God, Not at Him” Beloved, Regina Spektor’s song “Laughing With” lays bare a truth the prophets, apostles, and psalmists knew well: when life is smooth, humanity treats God like a toy. People mock Him, misuse His name, and twist faith into politics or superstition. They imagine Him as a genie, an ATM, or a tool for power. False prophets and culture warriors manufacture a god who grants wishes, hates their enemies, and blesses their ambitions. But that god is a cartoon—not the Holy One of Scripture. Yet when the storms come—hospitals, war, death, betrayal—mockery dies instantly. In crisis, people remember what pride made them forget: they are dust, and God alone is strong. Scripture says, “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted”—not near to the boastful, not near to the arrogant, but near to the desperate who finally let the walls fall down. This is why the song ends not with fear, but with communion: “We’re all laughing with God.” Not because suffering is funny, but because grace transforms us. When God restores, forgives, and carries us, we discover a joy deeper than jokes—joy rooted in His mercy. We learn to laugh with the God who comforts, the God who heals, the God who walks with us through the valley and brings us out again. So let us reject the distorted gods of politics, pride, and false prophecy. Let us cling to the God who remains present in hospital rooms, battlefields, and broken hearts. And when He brings us through, may our laughter be the laughter of people who know they are loved. Amen.

Title: “When Politics Becomes a God: Paul’s Warning Against Party Spirit” - Galatians 5:19–21 lists the “works of the flesh,” and many Christians read that list looking for the obvious sins. But tucked right next to idolatry and sorcery, Paul includes a word the RSV translates as “party spirit.” Tim Nichols points out that in the RSV, this phrase refers not to celebration or sexual indulgence, but to political-style factions inside the church — tribes, sects, ideological camps. Church, this is exactly what we are witnessing today. Christianity in America is being swallowed by tribal politics, and the result is a new idol: Christian nationalism. Not a love for country, but a belief that God’s kingdom is tied to one political movement or leader — a belief that political loyalty equals spiritual loyalty. Paul says this factional spirit is a work of the flesh. It is not born of the Spirit of Christ, who prayed “that they may all be one.” Instead, Christian nationalism divides the body of Christ into warring camps, demanding loyalty to a political tribe rather than to Jesus. What does “party spirit” look like today? It looks like Christians treating their political party as a test of faith. It looks like believers saying, “You’re not a TRUE Christian unless you vote like me.” It looks like churches turning pulpits into campaign stages instead of gospel altars. It looks like Christians being more passionate about saving America than saving souls. And it looks like people defending politicians with more zeal than they defend Christ. Paul knew this danger well. In 1 Corinthians 1 he rebuked the believers who said: “I follow Paul,” “I follow Apollos,” “I follow Cephas.” Today it sounds like: “I follow Trump,” “I follow Biden,” “I follow DeSantis,” “I follow my tribe.” And Paul’s rebuke echoes across the centuries: “Was Christ divided? Was your political leader crucified for you?”

Christian nationalism is the modern “party spirit” Paul warned about in Galatians 5:20. Tim Nichols explains that the RSV uses “party spirit” not for celebration, but for political factions inside the church—tribes demanding loyalty, dividing believers, and replacing Christ with ideology. Today, many Christians treat political identity as spiritual identity, as if voting a certain way proves holiness. That is not the gospel. Paul lists “party spirit” alongside idolatry because it turns earthly leaders into saviors, and nations into idols. When Christians attach their faith to a political tribe, they trade the unity of Christ for the division of the flesh. Jesus did not die to preserve a nation or defend a party—He died to save sinners and create one new people in Him. Any movement asking for loyalty that belongs only to Christ is a false altar. Reject political idolatry. Follow Jesus alone.

Paul writes in Romans 10:15, “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news.” The good news he speaks of is not nationalism, not political power, not loyalty to any empire—it is the gospel of Jesus Christ. Beautiful feet carry the message of mercy, justice, and peace. But today many false prophets preach not good news, but propaganda. They bring fear instead of hope, war instead of peace, and politics instead of Christ. They glorify earthly kings and call it faith. They tell people to trust America, parties, and politicians more than the Savior who died for them. That is not the gospel Paul proclaimed. True messengers bring tidings of grace, not greed; liberation, not domination; Jesus, not Caesar. Blessed are the feet that bring good news—shame to the feet that carry idolatry.

Paul teaches in Romans that both Jew and Gentile stand in need of the gospel, for “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Salvation does not come through nations, politicians, or empires. It does not come through America, Israel, or any earthly power. It comes only through the crucified and risen Christ. Jewish people do not need Trump. Gentiles do not need Trump. Both need the mercy of Jesus — the same Savior, the same cross, the same grace. When false prophets preach that political leaders are “anointed,” they replace the gospel with idolatry. When they claim America is God’s chosen instrument of salvation, they echo Rome, not Scripture. Only Christ saves; nations do not. Only the gospel reconciles; politics cannot. Jew and Gentile alike need the same thing: not empire, not nationalism, but Jesus.

Many conservative false prophets call Trump “the anointed one” or “the chosen one,” but Scripture shows this is spiritual deception. In Daniel 9, the “anointed one” points first to righteous figures like Onias III, and ultimately to Jesus Christ alone. God’s anointed is defined by holiness, justice, truth, and sacrificial love — not pride, cruelty, deception, or the hunger for power. When preachers place a political leader on a messianic pedestal, they commit blasphemy: they transfer a sacred title that belongs only to Christ and give it to a man seeking earthly authority. This is idolatry, the same sin that led Israel astray when they exalted kings instead of obeying God. Jesus warned that false prophets would arise and deceive many. Calling Trump “God’s chosen” is not faith — it is replacing the true Messiah with a counterfeit. Christ alone is the Anointed One; all others are pretenders.
