"... Boluarte of Peru was swiftly impeached and removed from office by Congress just after midnight on Friday, after a brazen shooting at a cumbia concert and mounting frustration over her failure to curb rampant crime prompted the parties that had long sustained her to withdraw their support."

I skipped #ASA this year but another social media app reminded me that 12 years ago I was the lucky winner of $100 worth of @oxfordunipress.bsky.social books. Still a peak moment of my ASA experience and the reason I always stop by the book exhibit 🤓

Day 3 of our writing retreat and no better time to get an R&R 🤓
June 25, 2025 at 6:46 PM
I could not have asked for a better group of women to write with this week! We picked the hottest week to spend time indoors supporting each others’ dreams. Day 2 of our writing retreat began with a walk around campus, & reflection about how in 1 week I get to change my title to Associate Professor

In the midst of so many things that are less than ideal, I had a wonderful moment yesterday when I met with a former student. Even though we had never met in person (thanks pandemic) a few years ago I advised her independent study on immigrant mental health and higher ed. 1/3

I finally got the celebratory vegan donuts from PVDonuts, so I can now officially share the wonderful news of my tenure and promotion, effective July 1st.

More thoughts on this soon, but for now, I celebrate 🎉

I teach at a school with a large nursing program and my intro to sociology classes are often filled with nursing students. Out of 35 of them only 2 knew about the cuts and grant cancellations in HHS and NIH, they were very upset when we discussed it - TALK TO YOUR STUDENTS ABOUT WHAT IS HAPPENING

12 years after going to my first ESS (in Boston!), and 10 years after my first presentation with then @umbsociology.bsky.social professor, Mat Creighton, I presented for the first time with my own grad students! Thank you @dpsocio.bsky.social for capturing the moment!

Extremely proud of my two grad students— Anna & Ali. Not only did they do an amazing job on our joint presentation, but Anna also did her own paper presentation on her research on the MAVNI program and immigrant recruits. If you’re at #ESS stop by our MA in Justice Studies table at the book expo!

Recently I was interviewed for this multi-media piece by Ithaca College student, Samantha Ruiz, & shared my thoughts on the moment we're in in higher ed in the context of immigration enforcement. It's students like Sam that give me hope in these dark times.

I thought about this yesterday as I boarded my flight in Boston. I can’t say my travel has been great (was delayed and had to spend the night in San Diego) but at least we stayed on the air the whole time! Let’s see what my flight to Monterey in about an hour is like. Here I come SEA conference 🌊
Ugh should I cancel all these conferences? I wanted to take my kid to Chicago for OAH but I don’t want us both to die in a plane crash

So, interviewing is like riding a bicycle, right? In just a few minutes I'll be conducting my first interview in 7 years... wish me luck!

I'm waiting for the first university to implement a broad hiring freeze due to uncertainty about federal funding and policies. These discussions are undoubtedly happening behind the scenes, but nobody wants to say it publicly yet. It feels a lot like March 2020 across much of higher ed.

Thrilled to be escaping the snow and heading to Monterey, CA for the Sociology of Education Association conference in a couple of weeks. I look forward to being in community with such amazing scholars and to learn more about their work. The program is 🔥!

Soon before I left my job at WSU I had the pleasure of having lunch with Michael Burawoy after he gave a talk on campus. The students loved his energy, passion, and down-to-earthness, and I shared in their enthusiasm for his work. A few hours with him was enough to know this is a great loss. RIP.

Marked safe from the earthquake.

I actually didn't feel it in Worcester, though, my spouse in the other side of the house did. My RA's, who were in RI and meeting with me on Zoom, did. That definitely made for an interesting Monday morning research team meeting!

Long thread on the UNC-Chapel Hill Chancellor's statement of compliance with ICE:

The Chancellor's response is not surprising and reflects the position of North Carolina when it comes to immigration enforcement. NC has hidden behind compliance with "the law" for decades. 1/10
UNC-Chapel Hill will ‘comply’ if ICE seeks students on campus, chancellor says
Schools and colleges are no longer considered “sensitive” spaces protected from immigration officials, under a new directive from the Department of Homeland Security.
