Today's my 45th birthday, and I'm staving off feeling ancient by sharing a recent once-in-a-lifetime opportunity: next Wednesday, May 7, I'll be a contestant on Jeopardy! I still kind of can't believe it. 😱 Check www.jeopardy.com/watch for your local listing. @jeopardyofficial.bsky.social
I’m definitely never hydrated enough.
how long does it take you though? and how much water do you consume while you’re at it? maybe we should hook you up to the OpenAIs servers 🤔

Regularly worried about some of these people's cardiovascular health.
Putting heart monitors on Olympian family members for TV is fucking weird

I really don't get the "using AI to write" thing because I can already generate mediocre prose all by myself.

It is, as the kids (still?) say, a weird flex.

There’s a lot to hate in this clip but one part getting overlooked is the end where this rep says the detention center is “nicer than some elementary schools in San Antonio.” Dude, that is not the talking point you think it is.
Gonzales on Liam Ramos and his family: "They're not gonna qualify for asylum. So what do you do with all the people that go through the process and do not qualify for asylum? You deport them. I understand that 5-year-old and it breaks my heart. I also think, what about that 5-year-old US citizen?"

It's just so weird and isolationist! "My god, the CIA, what could it possibly need to know about other countries?! Just give us a score on a scale of 1 to 100 how easy it would be to topple their regimes!"

I know it's small potatoes in the grand scheme of things, but the removal of the CIA World Factbook is really galling. My mom was a reference librarian for many, many years, and the Facebook was an essential resource for them among so many others. Christ, I hate these guys.

My pal Heather got laid off from WaPo today, and she is ridiculously awesome. You would be lucky to get her to write for you. LUCKY.
If you need editing or writing or a personality hire, my email is hkellywork@gmail.com, Signal is hkelly.11, Insta/Tiktok are @heatherthereporter

I was content to believe they didn’t entirely suck for as long as they kept you on, but now I know they really and truly are jerks. Sorry, pal.

All of those would have been great choices. Ugh. Why are billions always wasted on the wrong people?

If Bezos had cared about the Washington Post’s mission, he could have just funded it at a loss. There’s no reason he had to make a profit off it. He could lose money all year every year and still have more than enough to last him for his entire life and more. Instead he gutted it.
This is such fucking bullshit. How much do you have to suck at running a newspaper to not make money off sports coverage? And how do you "restructure" a metro section that's already been strangled into near-irrelevance? Just a complete betrayal of the Graham family's trust in Jeff Bezos.
WaPo's Matt Murray told staff the paper is shuttering sports, moving remaining staff to features, shrinking foreign coverage, restructuring metro, closing books coverage, suspending Post Reports podcast

“Whole company now waiting for a live or die email” one staffer said

Maybe we should just make a Nobel
Prize for Fucking Assholes because he could win that one. Oh man, you know how conflicted he’d be. Because he doesn’t want to admit he’s a fucking asshole but he does love winning prizes SO MUCH. It might make him explode. So, you know, win-win.

One of my favorite posts to write for Patreon readers every year is the one where I break down my income over the previous year by type of client (hat tip to @dmoren.com for giving me some ideas about how to structure this annual feature).

A few things worth mentioning for those who haven't worked in publishing:
* authors don't get benefits or health insurance
* we are contracted, not employees, and are paid according to a contractual schedule, not regularly
* most of us pay our agent 15% off the top
* then we pay about 30% to taxes

"Deescalation" is a weasel word when you use the passive voice and one side is exercising their first amendment rights to peaceful protests while the other side is murdering them.

By my count the administration has violated the first, second, fourth, filth, sixth, eighth, and tenth amendments. Quarter some troops in people’s homes and they win a set of steak knives!

Why are you so worried about people knowing who law enforcement officers are? I mean, if they’re innocent they should have nothing to fear, right?
January 25, 2026 at 7:29 PM
Seriously, how many more people do they have to kill. Shut it the fuck down.

I have worked for Phil in many places over many years and he is a damn fine writer and editor.
Well, all things come to an end, and so, just shy of 11 years, I am no longer employed by Tom's Guide.

If you're looking for a guy who can mash sentences together real good, feel free to give me a jingle.
