New Zealand guts climate policy it bragged about on the world stage
The law was once held up internationally as a model of transparency. The government just weakened it.

When I read government reports, they’re often word soups that initially sound well thought out and convincing. But I look for what’s not there. And I found a lot missing in the National Adaptation Plan, as I relate in my latest for @michaelwestbiz.bsky.social: michaelwest.com.au/the-dog-ate-...

NEW STUDY: How much CO2 can we safely store in geological formations?

In a new @nature.com study, we cross-check established academic and industry estimates with various risk factors.

We find a prudent geological CO2 storage limit that is about 10x smaller. /1

Aaaand the Albanese Government has approved its first fossil fuel expansion of the new term.

We're all (legitimately) focussed on genocide, while governments like ours are actively pursuing a policy of omnicide.

How nice to have a stinking parliamentary majority and use it for ecocide.

I was curious about what proportion of emissions produced by Chevron’s giant Gorgon gas plant is captured by its $3.5 billion carbon capture and storage system. The answer? About 1% michaelwest.com.au/chevron-carb...

When do we reach “net zero”? Not when someone’s offset spreadsheet claims we have. Actually, it’s when atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases stabilise (stop increasing). Every day we delay take us closer to natural tipping points.

Australia’s gas and coal extraction facilities (wells, LNG processing and mines) produce 17% of our local climate pollution *before* any of the stuff is burnt in export markets (where most of it goes) or here at home.

Australia's Coal & Gas projects account for (at least) 17%❗of domestic emissions before their climate-destroying product is even used🤯

What does your fave climate & enviro org say & do about the Albo govt's ongoing approval of Coal & Gas projects❓(31 & counting) #EOFYDonations
In fact, gas and coal extraction facilities (wells and mines) produce 17% of Australia’s domestic emissions. Before any of it is burnt. And that’s an understatement because fugitive emissions are wildly under measured. Net zero by 2050? Yeah nah. Because offsets don’t work - Energy Australia says so
June 12, 2025 at 12:25 AM
Fun facts from the Safeguard Mechanism 2024 data! Top three facilities by emissions. Just from the facility:
1. Chevron Gorgon 8.8 million tonnes (2% of Aus domestic total)
2. Inpex Icthys 6.7 MT (1.5%)
3. Woodside NW Shelf 6.1 MT (1.4%)
That’s 4.9% from just 3 gas giants. Before burning the gas.

Fundamentally, one of the worst lies of the fossil fuel industry in recent years, enabled by the for-profit carbon offsetting industry.
