Farm kid, long time teacher, exec dir of inquiryschools.org - often found frolicking in nature with the pup, Brin
Pinned
Pinning this to my profile:

Longtime classroom teacher in WI, KS, AZ and PA. Now leading Inquiry Schools as we work to start up and redesign learning environments that are inquiry based, project driven.

I spend most of my free time outside with my pup Brin in rural Wisco.
For folks needing a frame to process information in this absolute hellscape of propaganda/AI generated slop - the SIFT method is close to what I did when I was in the classroom. I love the first direction - STOP. For more guides.lib.uchicago.edu/c.php?g=1241... #sschat #edusky

Midnight in Wisconsin... I *should* have been in bed but then I would have missed this! Moonlight, stars, sparkly snow... Taking the dog out one last time for bed worked out well last night!

Just finished Kashana Cauley's The Payback. A book of its time in a way that is playful and so relevant. Loved it. I've got The Survivalists on hold at the library! #booksky
The Payback is out today, and you can buy it wherever books are sold. It comes highly recommended by Publishers Weekly, Booklist, The Boston Globe, Vanity Fair, the LA Times, the NYT, and dozens of people who hang out on this very website.

I read a book yrs ago with 'lesser' superheroes. One of them was Professor Well Actually. The book was absurd but I find myself thinking about Professor Well Actually frequently while on social media. Nuance, difference, preference, choice... All valid but apparently not to the Well Actually crowd.

Finding ways to bring knowledge to learners is tough these days. It needs to be accurate, relevant, engaging and accessible. I cast about looking for things like this all the time, explainers that use visuals to tell a story. This is gorgeous. www.abc.net.au/news/deeptime/ #sschat #edusky

KBJ to teachers: what gives me hope at this moment is young people, the students that come to the court and they are there because of their teachers... The teachers are preparing our future. The work you do is absolutely invaluable. #ncss2025 #sschat

Dorking out with the LoC on Sanborn Maps - Didn't ever put together that such small towns would have maps. Here is the nearest incorporated town, to my home. Merrillan, WI - circa 1904 www.loc.gov/resource/g41... #NCSS2025 #sschat

The stories being shared by Social Studies methods professors to incorporate inquiry, primary sources and joy into the lives of their pre-service teachers is a delight to hear. Many references to the power of the sources, the discussion, the curiosity. More of this! #NCSS2025 #LOC #TPS #sschat

Lee Ann Potter, Director of Prof Learning & Outreach Initiatives at Library of Congress - reminded us all of how wild this day was in DC - in 1865 - as the 39th Congress convened. I dipped into Chronicling America to see how it was covered - www.loc.gov/resource/sn8... #sschat #NCSS2025

So excited to be in DC for #NCSS2025 and to meet up with my Teaching with Primary Sources Teacher Network folks at the Library of Congress. First picture was on my early morning walk, second picture is a new meeting space in the LOC Adams building. #sschat

Just did this for all my email accounts. Blerg.
If you use GMail, AI (Gemini) was turned on yesterday by default and now scans all of your content for machine learning. To turn off, go to Settings>General and scroll down. Uncheck the box for "Smart features."

There's other "Smart" add-ons as well, but that's the one that reads your content.

Monday!
My next pay-what-you-can workshop is open for registration! It's on 11/17 and (fittingly for the week before Thanksgiving) we'll be talking about transitions in school: class to class, school to break and back to school, and more!
