A friend, born in Mexico but here legally for 20+ years, no longer leaves our city, has white friends go to Lowe’s for him, and asked his daughters and granddaughter not to speak Spanish in public and it breaks my fucking heart. We have become monsters.

The Searcher by Tana French. Cal is a retired Chicago detective starting a new life in rural Ireland who gets drawn into the mystery of a missing young man. Great small town characters, a rich sense of place and space. I’m a sucker for the poetry of Irish dialogue, and it’s utterly delightful here.
