Jo is a former junkie hired, she thinks, to find another young woman addict in 1950 NYC. Her sleuthing takes her (and us) through the most heartbreaking elements of the city. You can smell the sweat and feel the disillusionment. But you also sense the hope and the love underneath. Dope by Sara Gran

Honestly can’t tell if that lil cuke is happy to see me or if it’s just planning to use me as a pawn in its diabolical scheme

The Searcher by Tana French. Cal is a retired Chicago detective starting a new life in rural Ireland who gets drawn into the mystery of a missing young man. Great small town characters, a rich sense of place and space. I’m a sucker for the poetry of Irish dialogue, and it’s utterly delightful here.

Portsmouth VA’s own Missy Elliott gave a most generous donation to the HER Domestic Violence Shelter today. We are so grateful. She and her mom shared their story and are dedicated to giving back. Remarkable, kind, compassionate. And how is she still so gorgeous?

Entangled Life by Merlin Sheldrake explores the mostly invisible but wildly influential fungi that are literally everywhere and do nearly everything. I wish I were smarter with a better memory, because every few pages I got hit with a revelatory fact that I wanted to share with everyone I meet.

This is one of the most refreshing reads I’ve ever had. Lena and her wild best friend go with Lena’s dickhead son and his pregnant wife to Greece, to stay at the family’s luxury hotel. And all muhfuh’n hell breaks loose. This is mesmerizing, scary, visceral, real, surreal. Ecstasy by Ivy Pochoda

SA Cosby slams the gas pedal down and keeps it mashed there. Roman is a financial advisor with dark secrets and an unrelenting will who will do anything to protect his family. And lord do I mean ANYTHING. King of Ashes is a hard-charger of Southern noir that doesn’t let up. Don’t miss it

The Fact of a Body is an extraordinary book. Part true crime story - about the murder of a child - and part memoir - about the author’s traumatic childhood. Both are important stories to tell: haunting, layered, meaningful. Alexandria Marzano-Lesnevich Is a hell of a writer.

Police transcriber Hazel hopes to become a novelist. As she types up reports on a big case - first the death of a child, then another, then two murders - the line between her novel and her work blurs. I liked that Hazel is imperfect and real. Good stuff. Hello Transcriber by Hannah Morrissey

I tend to be drawn to simple writing that packs a punch, and this is it. A wealthy mom leaves the child rearing to her distant husband and their nanny. But the nanny decides she can give the girl a better life and kidnaps her. It’s desperate and messy and honest. The Tokyo Suite by Giovana Madalosso

Shiloh Hendrix was caught on camera repeatedly calling a five-year-old the N word. She has since posted a fundraiser explaining she simply “called the kid out for what he was,” thus doubling down on the N word. She has raised $700,000 as of today. And they say America does not have a racism problem.
